Jordanów is a town in the Suski powiat in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship , Poland . It is also the seat of the rural community of the same name ( gmina wiejska ) to which the city does not belong.

geography

Jordanów is located about 46 km south of Kraków on the Skawa River at the foot of the Beskid Makowski in the Rabka Basin . The city has an area of 20.00 km², 57% of which is used for agriculture and 34% is covered with forest.

history

The city was founded in 1564 by Spytek Jordan . In the following period the city became an important trading center. The goods were mostly salt, domestic cattle and / or fabrics. The city gained more and more importance because it was or is on the so-called Salt Road between Kraków and Wieliczka . At that time Krakow was still the capital of the Kingdom of Poland and Wieliczka had very large salt deposits. Since salt was also called “the white gold” because of its value at the time, the strategically good location at that time can be easily understood.

Due to its importance, the town became a separate county and came into the possession of the Trąby family . The Counts of Jordanów now called themselves Jordanowski.

From 1975 to 1998 the city was part of the Nowy Sącz Voivodeship .
