from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jorge Paulo Lemann (born August 26, 1939 in Rio de Janeiro ; resident in Langnau im Emmental ) is a Brazilian - Swiss investor and banker .

Life

Lemann's parents come from Switzerland, his father Paul Lemann was a cheese merchant in Langnau in the Emmental , emigrated to Bahia in the 1920s , worked in banking and became prosperous by growing cocoa. Jorge Paulo attended the American School of Rio de Janeiro from kindergarten .

At first he wanted to become a professional tennis player. He was Brazilian champion five times and played at Wimbledon . In the Davis Cup , he played a game for the Swiss Davis Cup team in 1962 , where he was defeated by the South Africans Cliff Drysdale and Gordon Forbes . In 1973 there was another mission, but this time for Brazil . Against Argentina he was again without a win, this time against Guillermo Vilas and Julián Ganzábal . Lemann still plays tennis today.

However, Lemann decided to study economics at Harvard University , where he made a corresponding bachelor's degree in 1961. From 1962 to 1963 he then worked as an intern for the Swiss bank Credit Suisse in Geneva. In 1971 he founded the former Banco Garantia with three other investors . Its takeover of the Brazilian brewery Brahma for US $ 60 million in 1989 was groundbreaking . Banco Garantia was sold to Credit Suisse in 1998 after it ran into economic difficulties. However, the Brahma brewery remained in the hands of the original investors, led by Lemann. As early as 1999, the Brazilian brewery competitor Antarctica was merged with Brahma and called the joint company AmBev . This takeover took place together with other business partners of GP Investimentos , who owned the majority control of AmBev. In 2004 AmBev merged with Interbrew from Belgium to form InBev . Later in 2008 InBev took over the largest US brewery company, Anheuser-Busch , resulting in AB InBev . Lemann was the key negotiating partner with August Busch IV . The shareholders of Anheuser-Busch could not withstand the offer of 54 billion US dollars. Lemann became the largest single shareholder in this new global brewery group, although he does not drink alcohol himself. In October 2016, AB InBev took over the second largest beer company in the world, the British-South African SABMiller , making it by far the largest brewery group in the world. Through this takeover, the global shopping center for raw materials in Steinhausen ZG came to the newly created group. The joint Anheiser-Busch InBev Procurement GmbH has now been founded in Steinhausen. Lemann remains the largest single shareholder in this group.

In 2010, he and his Brazilian business partners Marcel Herrmann Telles and Carlos Alberto Sicupira bought the controlling majority in the US company Burger King through their US investment company 3G Capital . In June 2013, together with partners from 3G Capital, he acquired the US company HJ Heinz Company in equal shares with Berkshire Hathaway (main shareholder Warren Buffett ) for 28 billion US dollars. There were suspicions of insider trading in connection with the takeover . The same group 3G Capital and Berkshire Hathaway announced in March 2015 the merger of the already acquired HJ Heinz Company with the Kraft Foods Group . The newly formed company is called The Kraft Heinz Company . In 2013, Lemann also took a 20% stake in an ice cream manufacturer that operates over 3,000 sales outlets in Brazil under the Diletto brand .

Lemann was married twice. His first wife was Maria de Santiago Dantas Quental, who died in 2005. His second wife is Susanna Lemann. He has a total of 6 children. After a brutal kidnapping attempt of his three youngest children in March 1999, Lemann lives with his family in Rapperswil-Jona on Lake Zurich , but also commutes between São Paulo and St. Louis on business . In November 2012, he was ranked the richest Brazilian and the second richest Swiss citizen by Forbes Magazine .

Lemann founded the non-profit foundation '' Fundação Lemann '' to promote public schools in Brazil.
