José Luis Ortiz Nuevo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

José Luis Ortiz Nuevo (born January 1, 1948 in Archidona ) is a Spanish director , director of stage events, impresario , actor , critic , poet and non-fiction author of flamenco .

Life

The beginnings

José Luis Ortiz Nuevo completed his studies in political science in Madrid as a licentiate . During his student days he discovered his passion for flamenco. According to him, a key experience was attending a performance by Enrique Morente in 1969. At that time he was a member of the left-wing opposition Frente de Liberación Popular . He was arrested by security police following a May Day rally and spent two months in Carabanchel Prison . While in prison he began to compose flamenco coplas .

In 1973 he met Pepe de la Matrona and Pericón de Cádiz and wrote their biographies. In the same year, while he was still a student, his essay El pensamiento político en el cante flamenco appeared in the magazine Triunfo . He began writing for a number of newspapers and magazines, including Informaciones , Triunfo , Tierras del Sur , Le Estafeta Literaria, and El Mundo Hispánico . It marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment as a specialist author, with an abundance of reviews, hermeneutic , political and historical investigations in book and magazine publications that he has since appeared.

In 1978 he was elected to the Seville City Council for the Partido Socialista de Andalucía , where he was appointed councilor for festivals and major events. In this function, he founded a festival in 1980 that was to develop into one of the most important flamenco events: the Seville Biennale .

Director of the Seville Flamenco Biennale

José Luis Ortiz Nuevo directed the Biennale until 1996, with the exception of 1986. In that year and the following year he directed the Cumbre Flamenca in Madrid.

In 1984 José Luis Ortiz Nuevo received the Premio Nacional de Prensa of the Chair of Flamencology in Jerez de la Frontera for his journalistic work . Once again he turned to well-known personalities of flamenco and wrote monographs on Enrique el Cojo , Borrico de Jerez and Anica la Periñaca .

He developed the Seville Biennale into an event that was open to contemporary trends and experiments in flamenco - not infrequently to the displeasure of conservative supporters of “pure” flamenco. His ideas he represented in 1996 in his polemic alegato contra la pureza . The Biennale not only offered well-known names a stage, but also offered young, as yet unknown artists the chance to perform in front of a large audience. For example, the 1988 Biennale became a springboard for Milagros Mengíbar's career. Inside and outside the Biennale, José Luis Ortiz Nuevo contributed to the development he was striving for with his own productions.

A first highlight of these performances was in 1990 in Paris Estrellas de la Bienal , a six-hour Concierto flamenco in three parts with 24 artists. The first part was devoted to the Malagueña and their musical relatives, the second part to the cante jondo , the solemn chants of the Soleá and the Seguiriya , and the third part to the festive and cheerful world of the alegrías , bulerías and tangos .

At the 1992 Biennale in Seville, he brought four pieces of his own to the stage, now with ample resources. In Tango, María Pagés shone with her first own large choreography. In Morente y Max Roach en Concierto , Enrique Morente and Max Roach merged flamenco with jazz . Al son de 3 x 4 , conducted by the guitarist Pedro Bacán , was a foray into the complex rhythms of the Soleá and the Bulería. Finally, Mediterranéo was a fantasy based on bittersweet poems by José Luis Ortiz Nuevo himself, which dealt with hugs and kisses, fiery physical desire, love play, and on the other hand sorrow, pain, horror, violence, war and death.

Two years later he brought De la luna al viento to the stage of the Biennale with the ballet company of María Pagés. Alongside her, singer Carmen Linares and guitarists Rafael Riqueni and José María Gallardo played the leading roles in this synthesis of flamenco, Andalusian folk music and classical music. Por aquí te quiero ver was his last contribution to the Biennale in 1996 as its director.

Under his direction, a series of thematic exhibitions and homages to well-known personalities of flamenco took place as part of the Biennale . He also used the Biennale to promote a number of book publications, including new editions of major historical works.

After 1996

Nevertheless, José Luis Ortiz Nuevo remained connected to the Seville Biennale as a poet, actor, playwright and reciter . From 1998 to 2006 he regularly had major speaking roles for his own texts in performances at the Biennale. At the 2004 Biennale he was artistic director, crier, playwright and comedian.

From 2001 he directed a series of television documentaries on flamenco for the Spanish broadcaster Canal Sur .

In 2007 he was appointed director of Málaga en Flamenco , a biennale that takes place in odd years. Since it was taking place for the seventh time, he had 7 x 7 performances staged in seven cycles. The performances took place in many different places, so that it became a festival for the entire province of Malaga .

Even outside of the festivals mentioned, he remained true to his literary and theatrical work despite his advanced age. In 2016 he initiated the book series Flamenco y Cultura Popular as co-editor at Athenaica publishing house in Seville.

In 2017 he was reappointed director of the Seville Biennale, but resigned after two months due to differences with the city administration.
