José Mauro Pereira Bastos

José Mauro Pereira Bastos CP (born September 12, 1955 in Cachoeiro de Itapemirim , Espírito Santo , Brazil , † September 14, 2006 in Carmópolis de Minas , Minas Gerais ) was a Brazilian religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Guaxupé .

Life

José Mauro Pereira Bastos joined the religious community of the Passionists , made his profession in 1981 and was ordained a priest on July 7, 1984 . From 1984 to 1985 he studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and obtained the Licentiate in Biblical Theology .

In addition to duties in pastoral care, he worked as headmaster and in various management functions of his order. In 1988 he taught as a professor at the philosophical-theological institute of the Archdiocese of Vitória and then until 1993 in Vila Velha and 1996/97 in Belo Horizonte . From 1989 to 1995 he was regional vicar of his order for the states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo. In 1988 and 1994 he took part in the General Chapter of the Passionists in Rome.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on July 5, 2000 as the first bishop of Janaúba, which was established on the same date . The Archbishop of Belo Horizonte , Serafím Cardinal Fernandes de Araújo , gave him episcopal ordination on September 17th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Silvestre Luís Scandián SVD , Archbishop of Vitória , and Washington Cruz CP, Bishop of São Luís de Montes Belos .

On April 19, 2006 he was by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed Bishop of Guaxupé . The inauguration took place on June 18 of the same year.

José Mauro Pereira Bastos died a few weeks later in a traffic accident on the BR-381 motorway, in which three other people were burned beyond recognition. His body, identified by the cross and the bishop's ring, was buried in Vitória at the request of the family .
