Josef Gerl (architect)
Josef Ignaz Gerl (born May 22, 1734 in Klosterneuburg ; † February 1, 1798 in Vienna ) was an Austrian builder and architect .
Life
Josef Gerl came from a widespread family of builders. His father was the monastery master builder of Klosterneuburg and city master builder of Vienna Mathias Gerl , whose eldest son he was. His brothers Liborius Thaddäus Gerl (1738–1805) and Philipp Ignaz Gerl (1738–1815) also became master builders. He learned the trade from his father, was acquitted in 1747 and accepted into the master builder guild in 1761. Gerl made a successful career in Vienna and made quite a fortune, so that, together with two other Viennese citizens, he was able to set up the Count Wurmserisch-Austrian-Styrian Freikorps to fight the French in 1793 at his own expense. From 1759 to 1765 he was married to Theresia, the widow of the court architect Johann Baptist Martinelli , and after her death, his second marriage in 1765 to Theresia Maria Anna Peffl, with whom he had six children. He died in a house of the former Himmelpfort monastery, which he had acquired in 1785 after it was closed. In 1795 Gerl received the medal of grace on a gold chain from Emperor Franz II.
meaning
Josef Gerl's work is stylistically influenced by the era of Emperor Joseph , Josephinism , and mostly shows simple, baroque - classicist forms. He was able to build large-scale projects and public buildings that required a great deal of organizational talent, but left little room for design measures in the external area. From church and residential construction to major public projects, he was active in all areas of construction.
