Jost Gippert (born March 12, 1956 in Winz-Niederwenigern , now Hattingen ) is a German linguist and Kaukasiologist , professor of comparative linguistics at the Institute for Empirical Linguistics at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main .

In 1972 Jost Gippert graduated from the Leibniz-Gymnasium in Essen-Altenessen with the Abitur and then studied comparative linguistics , Indology , Japanese Studies and Sinology at the Philipps University of Marburg and the Free University of Berlin (FUB) from 1972 to 1977 . After completing his studies, he obtained the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Dr. phil.) In 1977 at the age of only 20 with a dissertation on the syntax of the infinitive formations in the Indo-European languages . From 1977 to 1990 he held various positions as a research assistant and lecturer in Berlin , Vienna and Salzburg . As a research assistant for Oriental Computational Linguistics , he completed his habilitation in 1991 at the University of Bamberg with a thesis on Iranian loanwords in Armenian and Georgian .

Jost Gippert was appointed professor at the University of Frankfurt am Main in 1994 and teaches comparative linguistics . He also heads the Institute for Empirical Linguistics .

Since 1996 Gippert has been an external member of the Academy of Sciences in Gelati (Georgia) , since 2002 a member of the Turfan Commission and since 2007 a member of the Language Center of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences (BBAW).

In 1997 Gippert was made an honorary professor at the Sulchan Saba Orbeliani University in Tbilisi (Georgia), an honorary doctorate from the Ivan Jawachishvili University there in 2009 and an honorary doctorate from the Schota Rustaveli University in Batumi (Georgia) in 2013 .

Since his appointment to the professorship for comparative linguistics at the University of Frankfurt am Main in 1994, his main focus has been on the Indo-European languages ​​and their history as well as the general language typology, as well as the languages ​​of the Caucasus, which he has recently directed various international cooperation projects are dedicated. As a computational linguist, he has been managing the TITUS project he initiated since 1987, which aims at the electronic indexing of textual primary data in the traditional Indo-European and neighboring languages. His main research interests include historical-comparative linguistics, language typology, electronic corpora , multimedia language documentation and electronic handwriting analysis .

Palimpsest research on the Sinai

TITUS, ARMAZI, GNC, LOEWE and CEDIFOR

Jost Gippert is the founder and director of the TITUS project ( Thesaurus of Indo-European Text and Language Materials ), which aims at a complete digital recording of the textual material in ancient Indo-European languages ​​and related idioms. In 1999 he initiated the ARMAZI project (Caucasian Languages ​​and Cultures: Electronic Documentation) with the aim of a thorough digital recording of materials from Caucasian languages, which has since resulted in the project of a Georgian national corpus. Since 2010, Jost Gippert has headed the focus “Digital Humanities Hessen: Integrated processing and evaluation of text-based corpora” as part of the “State Offensive for the Development of Scientific and Economic Excellence” (LOEWE) of the State of Hessen (joint project of the University of Frankfurt with the Technical University of Darmstadt and the Free German Hochstift / Frankfurt Goethe Museum). CEDIFOR followed the LOEWE project as the Frankfurt Center for Digital Research in the Humanities, Social and Educational Sciences.

Electronic handwriting analysis

Jost Gippert has been working intensively with oriental manuscripts since the mid-1990s as part of projects on handwriting digitization (e.g. the Tocharian manuscripts from the Berlin Turfan collection) or on the palimpsest edition (e.g. the Caucasian-Albanian palimpsest manuscripts from Sinai ). As part of these activities, he made a guest stay in 2009 at the research group “Manuscript Cultures” at the University of Hamburg .
