Juan Miguel Echevarría (born August 11, 1998 in Camagüey ) is a Cuban athlete who specializes in the long jump .

Athletic career

Echevarría started athletics at the age of seven. When he was twelve, he began to focus on the long jump. At the age of 16, on May 15, 2015, he exceeded the 8-meter mark for the first time with a jump to 8.05 m. In the same year he took part in the Youth World Championships in Cali , where he took fourth place with a width of 7.69 m in the final. At the Pan American Junior Championships in Edmonton, he won with 7.76 m. In 2016 he was fifth at the U20 World Championships in Bydgoszcz with 7.78 m. He took part in the 2017 World Championships in London, but could not qualify for the final there.

In the 2018 season Echevarría made it to the top of the world. With a width of 8.46 m, he won the title at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham in early March . On June 10th he jumped 8.83 m at the Bauhaus Galan in Stockholm. However, because of a minimally too strong tail wind of 2.1 m / s, this performance was not on the best list. Still, it was the greatest distance achieved under any conditions in almost 24 years. Three days later, the Ostrava Golden Spike jumped 8.66 m under regular conditions. At the long jump meeting in Bad Langensalza at the end of June, he then increased the world's best for the year to 8.68 m.

At the Pan American Games in Lima in 2019 , he won the gold medal with 8.27 m.
