Julius Bauer ( pseudonym : Sebastian Brant the Younger ; born October 15, 1853 in Raab , today Győr, Hungary ; † June 11, 1941 in Vienna ) was an Austrian writer , librettist , journalist and editor .

Life

The from the western Hungarian -born Raab Julius Bauer put at the gymnasium of his hometown, the Matura from. Bauer, who turned to journalism in his early youth, wrote features and reviews for Raaber Lloyd while still at high school . In 1873 he moved to Vienna , where he began studying medicine .

Bauer, who a short time later devoted himself entirely to journalism, initially held positions as a freelancer for the periodicals Österreichische Bürgerzeitung. He then switched to the newspaper Die Tages-Presse and the magazine Der Floh nach Pest .

In 1879 Bauer was appointed editor of the newspaper Illustrirtes Wiener Extrablatt , where he was initially employed as a courtroom reporter, later he was given the role of theater speaker, and in 1928 he was retired. Julius Bauer was also a leader in the journalists and writers' association Concordia , of which he was made an honorary member in 1928.

Julius Bauer wrote the librettos for Karl Millöcker's operettas Der arme Jonathan , premiered in 1889, and Das Sonntagskind , premiered in 1892. He wrote the libretto for Johann Strauss' operetta Fürstin Ninetta with Hugo Wittmann . He wrote the antics Die Wienerstadt in words and pictures and To promote tourism as well as burlesques and reviews. He maintained friendly contacts with the group of art patron Jenny Mautner (1856–1938) and her husband, the industrialist Isidor Mautner (1852–1930), who in 1925 also acquired the Marienthal textile factory .

Julius Bauer is counted among the most influential Viennese theater critics of the late 19th and early 20th centuries .

He was married to Jenny Bauer (approx. 1860– August 31, 1931 Bad Ischl ) and had a daughter, Berta (1880–1952), who married Marino Rinaldini (1878– February 16, 1911, Vienna) in 1905. From this marriage Julius Bauer had a grandchild, Elisabeth, called Lili Rinaldini (1906–1980), who had some success as a dancer.

His grave is in the New Jewish Department of the Vienna Central Cemetery (Gate 4, Group 9A, Row 1, No. 13).
