Julius Emil Friedrich Wilhelm Karl Albert von Dresky and Merzdorf (born May 5, 1818 in Wesel , † March 29, 1899 in Berlin-Schöneberg ) was a Prussian artillery general .

Life

Julius was a son of the Prussian major a. D. Ferdinand von Dresky and Merzdorf (1785–1836) and his wife Friederike, born von Conring (1795–1830), a daughter of the government councilor Hermann Justus von Conring . His sister Friederike (1821–1878) was married to the notary Adolf Gritzner (1810–1859) and became the mother of the heraldist Maximilian Gritzner .

Career

After visiting the cadet houses in Potsdam and Berlin , Dresky was aggregated on August 18, 1836 as a second lieutenant of the Guard Artillery Brigade of the Prussian Army . From the end of September 1837 he was commanded for one year for further training at the United Artillery and Engineering School, was subsequently appointed artillery officer with a patent from November 7, 1836 and placed above the budget on April 30, 1839. He was appointed fireworks lieutenant on February 6, 1841 and assigned ad interim to the second foot department. On October 30, 1842, he was released from this command and returned to his regiment. During the March Revolution of 1848 he took part in the street fighting in Berlin . On November 4, 1848 he was released conditionally.

On November 10, 1849 he joined the artillery of the 1st contingent of the 1st battalion of the 2nd Guards Landwehr Regiment. There he was promoted to Prime Lieutenant on February 12, 1850 and posted to the Guards Artillery Regiment on May 17, 1850. There he received on November 12, 1850 a position as an extra-budgetary prime lieutenant and on June 30, 1852 he was also assigned to the regiment according to the budget. Dressky was promoted to captain in mid-June 1853 and battery chief on January 1, 1855 . On April 16, 1861 he was awarded the Knight's Cross First Class of the Order of Merit of St. Michael . He was then assigned to the board of directors of the artillery depot in Berlin on February 9, 1863, where he was promoted to major on March 17, 1863. Retaining his position, he returned to the Guards Artillery Regiment on July 7, 1864. But on May 10, 1865 he became adjutant of the General Inspectorate of Artillery, and he was placed à la suite of the Guards Artillery Regiment. During the German War of 1866 he served in the Great Headquarters . Subsequently, from September 7, 1866, he commanded the II. Department of the Guards Artillery Regiment and was also appointed a member of the study commission of the artillery and engineering school. On December 20, 1866, he also became a member of the examination commission for premier lieutenants of the artillery, and on December 31, 1866, he received the patent for lieutenant colonel retroactively to October 30, 1866.

As such he was posted to the artillery and engineering school on April 21, 1868 to represent the director. On August 24, 1868, he was appointed director there and was placed à la suite of the Guard Field Artillery Regiment. On June 18, 1869, he was promoted to colonel .

During the mobilization for the Franco-Prussian War he was appointed commander of Field Artillery Regiment No. 3 on July 21, 1870. He fought at Spichern , Vionville , Gravelotte , Noisseville , Beaune-la-Rolande , Le-Mans and the siege of Metz . He also took part in the battles of Change, Woippy, Montbarrais, Bais Comunum, Chilleurs aux Bois, Thery, Vaumainbert, Gien, Azay and Mazange. Awarded both classes of the Iron Cross , Dresky returned to his peacetime position on March 25, 1871.

In position à la suite of his regiment, he was commissioned on March 5, 1872 with the command of the Guard Artillery Brigade. On March 22, 1872 he was awarded the Order of Pour le Mérite and on October 26, 1872 appointed brigade commander. He was also promoted to major general on September 2, 1873 . On September 22, 1877 he came to the 1st foot artillery inspection as an inspector and on March 27, 1879 in the same function to the 4th field artillery inspection. In this position, Dresky rose to lieutenant general on November 1, 1879 and became inspector of the 2nd field artillery inspection on November 6, 1879. At the same time he was also a mid-December 1879 Präses working of Examiners for captains and lieutenants Premier of artillery until he awarded the 8th March 1884 Red Eagle Order , First Class with oak leaves and board for disposition was made. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Vionville, Kaiser Wilhelm II paid tribute to him on August 16, 1895 by conferring the character of General of the Artillery.

He died on March 29, 1899 in Berlin-Schöneberg.

Dresky married on May 20, 1846 in Berlin Philippine Charlotte Jacob (1826-1902), a daughter of the rentier Philipp Jacob.
