Julius Theodor Karl Georg Christof Schmidt , von Schmidt since 1873 (born August 3, 1827 in Kassel ; † September 22, 1908 there ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Julius was a son of the Hessian major general and war minister Heinrich Schmidt (1788-1850) and his wife Julie, née Beste (1796-1827).

Military career

Schmidt was initially a cadet in Kassel and was hired on June 9, 1846 as portepeefähnrich in the body guard regiment of the Kurhessische army . At the end of July 1846 he was promoted to second lieutenant , joined the 1st Infantry Regiment "Kurfürst" in mid-November 1850 and from March 1851 served as adjutant of the 1st Battalion. When he was promoted to Prime Lieutenant , Schmidt was transferred to the 3rd Infantry Regiment on April 5, 1853, and was assigned to the engineer company for five months. From November 12, 1859 to April 11, 1863 he was adjutant of the 2nd Infantry Brigade and then joined the General Staff as a captain . This was followed from April 9, 1865 to June 15, 1866 as a government commissioner in military matters in the assembly of estates in Kassel and during the subsequent war against Prussia he was in southern Germany.

After the lost war and the annexation by Prussia, Schmidt was taken over into the Association of the Prussian Army on October 30, 1866 , initially aggregated to the General Staff of the Army and used in the General Staff. From June 7, 1867 to May 26, 1868 he was assigned to the General Command of III. Army Corps in Berlin and meanwhile promoted Schmidt to major . As such, he was in the General Staff of the High Command of the 2nd Army in 1870/71 for the duration of the mobile relationship on the occasion of the war against France . Schmidt took part in the battles at Vionville , Gravelotte , Noisseville , Orléans , Beaugency and Le Mans as well as the siege of Metz . Awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class, he was appointed commander of the 1st Battalion in the 6th Brandenburg Infantry Regiment in Frankfurt (Oder) after the peace treaty on September 21, 1871 .

For his many years of service , Kaiser Wilhelm I. elevated Schmidt to the hereditary Prussian nobility on January 19, 1873 . In March 1873 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and on April 13, 1875 he was commissioned with the command of the Westphalian Fusilier Regiment No. 37 under position à la suite . On June 19, he was appointed regiment commander and on July 3, 1875, he was promoted to colonel . As major general he was transferred to Oldenburg on October 18, 1881 and appointed commander of the 37th Infantry Brigade stationed there. In this position Schmidt received the Red Eagle Order II. Class with Oak Leaves in January 1884 and was put up for disposition on February 11, 1886 with the character of Lieutenant General and the statutory pension . After his farewell , on the occasion of Wilhelm I's 100th birthday on March 22, 1897, the Kaiser awarded him the Order of the Crown, 2nd class with a star.

family

Schmidt married Ida von Wurmb (1833-1894) from the Großfurra house on April 15, 1856 in Kassel . The daughters Emma (1857–1890), Marianne (* 1861) and son Heino (1863–1896) emerged from the marriage.
