The Jumbo Markt AG , headquartered in Dietlikon is a Swiss DIY company and a wholly owned subsidiary of the Maus Frères . In 2018, Jumbo generated sales of around 555 million Swiss francs .
history
Beginnings
In 1972, Hans-Rudolf Stahel began to set up a new chain of hypermarkets with large retail spaces outside the city centers. In 1969, Stahel founded the successful Waro AG based on the US model. Stahel chose the newly zoned industrial area in Dietlikon as the location for the first wholesale market . The inflatable hall construction of the building resembled a lying mammoth or elephant - a jumbo. The name of the company was derived from this: “Mammut-Jumbo AG”. An autumn storm destroyed the hall. The company rented a circus tent as a temporary sale . It was eventually replaced by a steel hall, but the name «Jumbo» was retained.
Non-food and food
In 1974 the first jumbo wholesale store opened under new ownership: the Maus Fréres Holding. The product range included a wide range of non-food items as well as food . By the end of the 1990s, Jumbo had opened eleven wholesale stores.
First pure hardware store
In 1982 Jumbo opened the first DIY store in Bachenbülach - a wholesale store based on the US model , geared entirely towards leisure and hobby needs . By the end of the 1990s, a total of 34 stores had been opened in all parts of Switzerland .
In order to draw attention to imminent store openings and to generate general attention, Jumbo used, among other things, a striking yellow hot air balloon . This special form of advertising attracted a great deal of attention at the time and the motif of the yellow balloon gained fame throughout Switzerland.
From 2000 the Maus Frères Holding formed a strategic alliance with the French retail company Carrefour . Jumbo separated the wholesale market from the hardware store business; the ten hypermarkets became Carrefour branches. Since then, Jumbo has concentrated on its DIY store expertise.
In 2007 Carrefour withdrew from Switzerland. The last twelve hypermarkets, in which Carrefour and Maus Frères each held half, were sold to Coop .
Online shop
An online shop was opened in spring 2018. Jumbo thus closed the last gap in the “ customer experience journey ”: The customer can research, compare, experience, order and pick up the products and services on the channel of his choice.

Branch network
Throughout Switzerland, Jumbo operates 39 DIY stores in three sizes in a dense branch network . Customers can find the full range in the 13 “JUMBO maximo” stores, which offer around 65,000 products on up to 8,000 m². The locations are in Arbon , Allmendingen , Bachenbülach, Baden-Dättwil , Bussigny , Biel , Conthey , Dietlikon, Emmen , Givisiez , Geneva-Meyrin , Hinwil and Montagny-Yverdon . Most Swiss customers are familiar with Jumbo's classic medium-sized DIY store format. In urban centers , the company also runs shops in the clear “JUMBO compact” format, the range of which is tailored to the needs of the urban population.
range
Jumbo brings together building materials and hardware stores , painters, carpenters and gardeners as well as a few other shops under one roof. The result is a hardware store with specialized departments . This is documented by three examples: With around 40,000 bicycles sold , Jumbo is the largest bicycle dealer in Switzerland. At the same time, the company offers the most extensive range of lamps in Switzerland with around 2,500 different lamps . Jumbo also has the most extensive range of garden products in Switzerland - for example 44 different types of soil and 160 different types of liquid and hard fertilizer .
An ecological basic attitude has been anchored in the company's mission statement since 1999 . The range designation “OEKO-TIPP” stands for products that have a nationally or internationally recognized environmental or social label. The company relies on nine strong labels and international standards . Around a fifth of sales are generated with these products.
For products bearing the “BEST PRICE” label, Jumbo guarantees that this product will not be found cheaper in any other Switzerland hardware store or its online shop within 30 days of purchase.
Jumbo has been a partner in the «ARENA SAS» alliance since 2007 - an international network of DIY stores that cooperate in the procurement area .
Popular services throughout Switzerland
Jumbo is known among the Swiss population for its comprehensive range of services in the hardware stores. These are grouped under the “SERVICE TOTAL” label. Customers can, for example, cut wood or the carpet of their choice to size for free or have their desired color mixed free of charge. In 16 branches, customers can transport their bulk purchases home themselves using a free car trailer.
