Karadeniz Ereğli (abbreviated Kdz. Ereğli ) or short Ereğli (at the time of the Ottoman Empire : Bender-i Ereğli ) is a town and capital of the district of the same name in the province of Zonguldak in the western Black Sea region of Turkey . The city is 46 kilometers by road southwest of the provincial capital Zonguldak . According to the city seal, it received the status of a Belediye (municipality) in 1880 .
The city has over 100,000 inhabitants and is the largest town in the province. It houses the largest steel mill in Turkey owned by the Erdemir steel group . The city goes back to the ancient Herakleia Pontike ; the name Ereğli is derived from Heraclea . It is also referred to as Bendereğli or Bender Ereğli in Ottoman sources of the 15th and 16th centuries . Evliya Çelebi called it Bartın Ereğlisi .
Ereğli is one of the few natural harbors on the western Turkish Black Sea coast. It is protected from the north winds behind the Bababurnu promontory on the slope. A coastal road separates the city and the sea. The first known settlement occurred by Greek colonists in the 6th century BC. Here ruled u. a. Clearchus and Lysimachus . During the rule of the Ottomans it belonged to the Beylerbeylik Anatolia and was part of the Sanjak Bolu as a judicial district . Tax registers from the 16th century show the picture of a small town with around 1,200 inhabitants. In the 20th century, it lagged behind the strong growth of Zonguldak.
The Turkish Navy operates a base in Ereğli .
