Karen Gorham

Karen Marisa Gorham (born June 24, 1964 ) is a British Anglican theologian . On November 26, 2015, her appointment as Suffragan Bishop of Sherborne in the Diocese of Salisbury was announced.

Life

Gorham studied at the University of Bristol , where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1995 . Prior to her church career, Gorham worked in the administration of the Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) and the Royal Society of Arts (RSA). She has also served as a Pastoral Assistant in Essex and Hull .

In preparation for her priesthood, she attended Trinity College in Bristol , an Anglican theological college in the evangelical tradition. In 1995 she was ordained a deacon . In 1996 she was ordained a priest . Their priests career began in 1995 as vicar ( Curate ) in Northallerton with responsibility for the community in Kirby Sigston in the Diocese of York . She held this office until 1999. In 1999 she became pastor ( Priest in Charge ) at St Paul's Church in Maidstone in the Diocese of Canterbury . She headed the parish until 2007.

At the same time, from 2002 on, she was responsible for the formation of the next generation of priests in the diocese as “Assistant Director of Ordinands”. In 2003 she was Dean District (Rural Dean / Area Dean) of Maidstone, 2006 also Ehrenkanonikerin (Honorary Canon) of the Canterbury Cathedral .

In October 2007 she became archdeacon ( Archdeacon ; head of a church district) of Buckingham in the Diocese of Oxford. On October 6, 2007, she was officially established as Archdeacon of Buckingsham at All Saints Church in High Wycombe by Alan Wilson , Bishop of Buckingham . In preparation for her bishopric, she continued to exercise this office until January 19, 2016.

On November 26, 2015, her appointment as Suffragan Bishop of Sherborne in the Diocese of Salisbury was announced. She succeeded Graham Kings , who retired on July 15, 2015. As Bishop of Sherborne, Gorham has particular responsibility for the parishes in the county of Dorset . Gorham is the eighth bishop and sixth suffragan bishop in the Church of England; Before her, seven women, Libby Lane , Alison White , Rachel Treweek , Sarah Mullally , Ruth Worsley , Anne Hollinghurst, and Christine Hardman, were ordained bishops. She will be ordained bishop on February 24, 2016 during a service in Westminster Abbey . She will formally take office in the Diocese of Oxford in March 2016.

Karen Gorham was a member of the General Synod of the Church of England for twelve years before her appointment as bishop; in the last two years she was a member of the “Panel of Chairs” of the General Synod.

Gorham is a believer in "Christian naturism ". Her parents were supporters of the nudist movement; she grew up naked in her parents' home. As a teenager, she eventually stopped going to nude beaches with her parents. Although not a nudist herself , she supports the movement as an expression of living in harmony with nature with body and soul. In 2000 she was co-author of the book Naturism and Christianity: Are They Compatible? Published by Grove Books . . Gorham said she wanted her book to help break a taboo; many nudists are Christian and rooted in their local communities. Naturism has nothing to do with sexuality , but is an expression of a holistic way of life; For Christians, nudity is not a reason to have a guilty conscience.

Honors and private matters

In 2012 Gorham was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA). Gorham is unmarried. Her hobbies include walking and traveling ; she is also interested in the British coast and the Celtic religion . She likes to spend her free time with friends or with a meal in a good restaurant.
