Kari Juhani Myyryläinen (born October 22, 1963 in Hyvinkää ) is a former Finnish cyclist and national cycling champion .

Athletic career

During his amateur career he was a member of Turku Sports, Pontyva Hyvinkää and Porvoon Akilles clubs . He achieved his first successes in the youth at his starts in the Nordic Championships, where he reached podium places several times. In 1982 he won the first title, he won the team time trial of the Nordic championships with his team , in 1983 he won the individual title in the road race . As a result, he won a total of 21 national titles in various disciplines: 1985 and 1986 in road races, furthermore in cross-country races , in team time trials , in individual time trials , in criterion , in team pursuit and in points trial . Myyryläinen started twice in the Summer Olympics . In 1984 in Los Angelos he finished 25th in the Olympic road race and 13th in the team time trial with his team. In 1996 he competed in the mountain bike race in Atlanta and finished 63rd. He represented Finland several times at the UCI World Championships , his best result was 1985, when he finished ninth in the street race. He was also at the start with the Finnish team in the team time trial and in the team pursuit, but could not take any top positions. Myyryläinen competed in a variety of stage races in Europe. He drove the Tour de l'Avenir in 1986 and won a stage there in 1987 , and he contested the International Peace Tour three times, with 38th place being his best place in 1991. He was also often at the start in Germany . a. he stood twice on the podium of the Berlin stage trip . In 1986 he became a professional driver for the Spanish team Reynolds and was active as a professional until 1988. He was the first Finn to take part in the Giro d'Italia , but had to give up the race in 1988. However, he had some problems with the organization and the quota of races that his team gave him. Language problems and the disappointment about not being nominated for the Tour de France , which he had hoped for, also played a role, so he decided to end his professional career at short notice and let himself be reamateurised . After his time as a professional rider, he turned to mountain biking in Finland. Here, too, he was twice able to become title holder at the Nordic Championships (1993 and 1994). He ended his active career in 1996.

After his career he took up a job as a coach for his club. The Finnish Orienteering Federation appointed him coach of its national team in 2002.

Familiar

Kari Myyryäinen's father Reijo Myyryläinen and his uncle Seppo Myyryläinen have won several TUL championships in cycling. His father was a mechanic and team leader for the Finnish cycling team at the 1984 Olympic Games.

Honors

In 1985 he was voted best athlete by the Finnish Workers' Sports Association TUL ( Suomen Työvänen Urheiluliitto ).
