biography

Karl Borromäus Landsteiner was born in 1835 as the son of Franz Landsteiner (1787-1859), the canon estate and palace administrator in Stoitzendorf, and Theresia Antonia Schaur . The father, the son of a judicial and regional court administrator in Weinern , was also a draftsman and painter . His grandfather Anton Schaur was the orphan office administrator in the Lilienfeld Abbey , his father's brother, Columban Landsteiner , was dean and conventual of the Melk Abbey .

Landsteiner studied theology and philology and passed the state examination in history , art history , geography and German . In 1857 he joined the Piarist Order and was ordained a priest in 1860 . He was promoted to the world priesthood in 1873. As a Catholic priest, Landsteiner was Prefect of Studies in the Count's Löwenburg Konvikt in Vienna, and Imperial and Royal Professor of German and History at the Piarist high schools in Krems (1864–1869) and in Vienna (1869–1886) . In addition, he was active as a member of the Vienna City Council from 1876–1886. Karl Borromäus Landsteiner was a member of the state school board , school clerk in the Vienna archbishop's consistory , honorary doctor , from 1880 canon of St. Stephan and lastly provost of Nikolsburg in Moravia, where he died in 1909. As a writer, he wrote stories in weekly newspapers and calendars, articles on animal welfare, novels, epics , dramas , poems and, above all, novellas, most of which appeared in magazines .

He said of himself that his motto was: As God wills . When asked for a self-assessment, he quoted one of his poems:

What could be nicer in the world than
to wander through the world,
from one place to another.
How's a bird under the sky?

So I wander under God's protection,
So I go through life happily ,
I am always devoted to what is right,
So I offer defiance to the whole world.
