Karl Köchy

Karl Georg Heinrich Eduard Köchy (born October 26, 1800 in Braunschweig ; † May 11, 1880 in Plagwitz , Leipzig ) was a German lawyer , writer , director and theater director .

Life

Köchy was the son of a high school professor . He passed through the Katharineum and the Collegium Carolinum in Braunschweig (at the same time as August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben ) . He then studied law at the University of Göttingen from 1818 to 1819 , then moved to the University of Berlin . There he came into contact with Christian Dietrich Grabbe , Heinrich Heine and Friedrich von Uechtritz and began writing. In Berlin he expanded his studies to include art and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . He then returned to Braunschweig, where he became an attorney after successfully passing his state examination in law .

Köchy gave up his law firm in Braunschweig in 1828. He went on a journey and met August Haake , with whom he was striving for the future of the theater. In 1830 he founded the Rheinische Theaterzeitung in Mainz . After August Klingemann's death , on January 25, 1831, Köchy became a theater poet, secretary and theater director at the Hofbühne in Braunschweig . In 1842 he was appointed director at the theater and in 1843 he was appointed director's council and shaped the repertoire and style of performance until 1856, the year of his retirement. He was succeeded by Eduard Schütz . Christine Enghaus , also from Braunschweig, was one of the young talents sponsored by Köchy .

In 1874, Köchy moved to Weimar and then via Coburg to Leipzig. There he finally died.
