Karl Müllner (born February 18, 1956 in Mainburg ) is a retired German Lieutenant General . D. the Bundeswehr . In his last post from April 25, 2012 to May 29, 2018, he was the 15th inspector of the Air Force and thus held this post as long as no inspector before him.

Military career

Karl Müllner joined the German Armed Forces on January 1, 1976 and completed his basic military training as a sergeant candidate in Ulmen. This was followed by pilot training in Appen and Fürstenfeldbruck . In 1978, Müllner switched to the career of troop service officers and completed his officer training in Fürstenfeldbruck. In 1981 and 1982 he trained as an F-4F pilot in the USA. From 1983 to 1989, Müllner was deployed as a fighter pilot, flight and weapons instructor, and operations and weapons officer in the 74 Mölders Fighter Wing . From 1990 to 1992 he was a squadron captain in the same association.

After participating in the 37th general staff training course at the command academy of the German Armed Forces in Hamburg from 1992 to 1994, Müllner was transferred to the command of the 2nd Air Force Division in Birkenfeld as Head of Department A3a , where he stayed from 1994 to 1995. In 1996 he was again employed as a troop leader, namely as commander of the flying group in Jagdgeschwader 73 in Laage . From 1998 to 2000 he was appointed to the ministerial position as a speaker on the fundamentals of military policy and bilateral relations in the command staff of the armed forces . In 2000, Müllner was appointed commodore of Jagdgeschwader 74 Mölders . From 2002 he was department head A3 in the air force command . From 2003 to 2005 he was head of the unit in which he had previously been a speaker from 1998. He was promoted to deputy department head in the command staff of the armed forces in 2005. From 2007 to 2009, Müllner was commander of the 2nd Air Force Division in Birkenfeld and then again from April 1, 2009 in Department III (military policy and arms control) of the command staff in the Federal Ministry of Defense Armed forces, this time as head of department.

On April 25, 2012, he took over command of the Air Force from Aarne Kreuzinger-Janik . He handed over this post to Lieutenant General Ingo Gerhartz on May 29, 2018 . Müllner was retired on May 31, 2018.

Position as inspector of the Air Force

In August 2012, shortly after taking office, Müllner publicly spoke out in favor of the purchase of armed drones . He was the first high-ranking general in the Bundeswehr to speak out in favor of it publicly. In January 2013, the government ( Merkel II cabinet ) spoke out in public for the first time in favor of the purchase of armed drones. Germany has been negotiating with Israel about the purchase of armed Heron drones since April 2013 ; the deal was approved by the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court on May 31, 2017 , before which the losing competitor General Atomics opposed the decision to buy Heron drones the Ministry had proceeded.

Muellner was as Inspector of the Air Force in May 2015 the Russian Federation with a travel ban occupied.

After he had publicly contradicted Federal Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen in the debate about a new fighter aircraft, some media speculated about the reasons for his transfer to temporary retirement.
