Rolf H. Portz (born October 15, 1940 in Bremen ) is a retired German lieutenant general. D. the Bundeswehr ( air force ). From 1997 to 2001 he was inspector of the Air Force .

Military career

Rolf Portz joined the Air Force in 1960 and completed his training as an officer and jet pilot in Uetersen , Landsberg am Lech and Fürstenfeldbruck by 1964 . During this time he was trained on the Piper L-18 , North American T-6 , Lockheed T-33A and Fiat G.91 . After his promotion to first lieutenant , he was transferred to the Fighter Bomber Squadron (JaboG) 35 in Husum . For Hauptmann was promoted as a reconnaissance pilot and use officer in the light combat squadron 41 (also Husum) used. From 1970 to 1972 Portz took part in the Air Force's 15th General Staff Course . He was then deployed as a major in the German-Danish NATO headquarters, the Allied Command Baltic Approaches in Karup , Denmark . As a general staff officer and head of department at the 3rd Air Force Division command  , he was posted to Kalkar from 1975 to 1977 , after he was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1974 . Portz was deputy commander of the flying group in JaboG 43 in Oldenburg until 1979 , before commanding it until 1980.

Before he was promoted to colonel , he was a senior officer in the armed forces at the Federal Ministry of Defense in Bonn . He then became department head in the command of the 2nd Air Force Division in Birkenfeld . As commodore of Fighter Bomber Wing 49 , he did his service until 1987, before he took up another ministerial assignment as head of department. In 1990 Portz was appointed brigadier general and became head of the Bundeswehr studies and exercises in Bergisch Gladbach . Two years later he became a major general at the headquarters of the Allied Forces for Europe ( SHAPE ). In 1993, Portz became Lieutenant General and Commanding General of the Air Force Command North, before becoming Deputy Inspector of the Air Force in 1994. On October 1, 1997, Lieutenant General Rolf Portz was appointed Inspector of the Air Force by the then Federal Defense Minister Volker Rühe . He held this position until March 31, 2001.
