Karl Maria Freiherr von Aretin auf Haidenburg (born July 4, 1796 in Wetzlar , † April 29, 1868 in Berlin ) was a Bavarian historian, diplomat and politician.

Life

Karl Maria von Aretin came from the noble family Aretin . His parents were Johann Christoph von Aretin and his wife Dorothea, geb. by Requilé (* 1795). After graduating from high school in 1811 at the (today's) Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich , he studied law in Landshut and Munich and took part in the wars of liberation from 1813 to 1815 as a lieutenant in the Bavarian Army . From 1820 to 1822 he was a member of the Bundestag legation in Frankfurt am Main , after which he was active in the Bavarian General Staff and War Ministry. In 1826 he left the army and has since worked in agriculture and as the author of several historical works. In 1843 he returned to the civil service as a legation counselor and was a member of the board of directors of the Bavarian House and State Archives. In 1847 and 1848 he was the Bavarian chargé d'affaires in Berlin and in 1849 he became a secret legation councilor in Vienna . In 1852 he was appointed to the Real Secret Council and from 1855 he was director of the Bavarian National Museum .

Since 1855 he was a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1859 he became a member of the Chamber of the Bavarian Imperial Councils for life . In February 1868 he was elected to the customs parliament in the Schwaben 4 constituency ( Illertissen , Neu-Ulm , Memmingen , Krumbach ) , but died just two days after its opening session in April of the same year. He represented the political direction of the Bavarian Patriot Party .
