The father was an engineer and master electrician, the grandfather a cooper and cooper master . At the end of the Second World War, when he was fifteen, Oppermann fixed his career choice on painting and began to write at the same time.

After graduating from the Städtisches Fürst-Otto-Gymnasium, today's Gerhart-Hauptmann-Gymnasium Wernigerode, Oppermann left the GDR out of political conviction and studied from 1950 at the University of Fine Arts in what was then West Berlin . At first Oppermann devoted himself to art education with Ludwig Gabriel Schrieber ( sculpture ) and Curt Lahs (painting) and then switched to painting as a master student of Ernst Schumacher . In the 1960s, Oppermann became known through his first exhibitions in Berlin . In his art he strove to convey a "humane mission". In this sense he felt obliged to the Central German painting tradition. The friendship with the Polish literary and theater critic Andrzej Wirth also began around 1960 . On the occasion of his first trip to Latin America with exhibitions in Bogotá and Caracas , Oppermann's first name was found in a newspaper review by Luis Freres as “Prusiano-Latino”. The term can be traced back to Oppermann's in-depth examination of the Prussian past, which resulted from his claim to political and historical enlightenment, as well as his emotional ties to Spain (Eng .: “committed Prussians and Latin Americans”). Numerous solo exhibitions have taken Oppermann to Caracas, Lima , New York , São Paulo and many European capitals such as Berlin, Brussels , Paris , London and Prague .

In 1971 he was appointed professor at his alma mater , today's University of the Arts (UdK). Oppermann taught free painting here for 25 years . He worked for many years in university politics, was a senator of the UdK, represented colleges and universities in the broadcasting council.
