Karl Theodor von Below (born April 2, 1818 in Königsberg , † March 1, 1897 in Wiesbaden ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Origin and family

Karl comes from the old Mecklenburg - Pomeranian noble family von Below . He was a son of the later Prussian Lieutenant General Theodor von Below (1765–1839) and his wife Friederike, born von der Goltz (1787–1853). His brothers Anton (1808–1896) and Ferdinand (1812–1870) were also Prussian lieutenants general. Karl von Below remained unmarried and left no children behind.

Military career

Below first visited the cadet house in Kulm from 1828 and from 1832 in Berlin . In 1835 he was promoted to Portepeefähnrich in a dragoon regiment of the Prussian Army and in 1836 rose to the position of Second Lieutenant . From October 1845 to September 1846 he was assigned to the teaching squadron . Since 1849 he was regimental adjutant . This was followed in 1850 by the promotion to Prime Lieutenant , in 1852 to Rittmeister and in 1853 to squadron chief in the 1st Dragoon Regiment . Also in 1853 he became an adjutant at the General Command of the 1st Army Corps . Below rose to major in 1861 and in 1866 was commander of the 8th Uhlan Regiment . In the same year he took part in the German War , in particular the battles near Trautenau and Tobitschau , as well as the Battle of Königgrätz and received the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class with swords. After his promotion to colonel in 1868, he received the Order of the Red Eagle III. Class with swords. He also took part in the Franco-German War , here the battles at Gravelotte and Beaune-la-Rolande , the siege of Metz and three other skirmishes. In the campaign he earned the Iron Cross, 2nd class. In 1871 Below became the commander of the 16th Cavalry Brigade and in 1873 he was promoted to major general . Granted the character of Lieutenant General, he was put up for disposition on January 2, 1876 and received the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves and swords on the ring, on January 18.
