Ferdinand Adolf Eduard von Below (born July 4, 1812 in Königsberg , † October 21, 1870 in Pont-à-Mousson ) was a Prussian major general and commander of the 36th Infantry Brigade .

Life

Ferdinand was a son of the Prussian Lieutenant General Theodor von Below (1765–1839) and his wife Friederike, née von der Goltz (1787–1853). His brothers Anton August (1808-1896) and Karl Theodor (1818-1897) both rose to lieutenant general in the Prussian army .

Military career

Below visited the cadet houses in Kulm and Berlin . Subsequently, on August 13, 1830, he was transferred to the 1st Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army as a portepeef ensign and was promoted to secondary lieutenant by mid-November 1831 . From mid-April 1842 to mid-May 1851 he was assigned to various positions as adjutant and in the meantime rose to prime lieutenant in May 1846 . On January 3, 1851 Below became a captain and company commander . As a major , from late March 1858 to early April 1860 he was in command of the 2nd Battalion in the 3rd Landwehr Regiment in Gumbinnen . This battalion formed the trunk of the 2nd battalion in the 3rd Combined Infantry Regiment, from which the 6th East Prussian Infantry Regiment (No. 43) was formed on July 4, 1860 . Below remained in the position as battalion commander and became lieutenant colonel in mid-October 1861 . On April 18, 1865 he was appointed commander of the Westphalian Fusilier Regiment No. 37 and two months later he was promoted to colonel . During the war against Austria Below led his regiment in 1866 in the battles near Skalitz , Schweinschädel and Königgrätz . In the battle of Nachod he commanded the avant-garde and was able to hold his position until the reinforcements arrived. For this, King Wilhelm I awarded him the Order of Pour le Mérite on September 20, 1866 .

After the war, Below received the Order of the Red Eagle III in January 1869 on the occasion of the festival . Class and was transferred to Rendsburg on June 18, 1869 as major general and commander of the 36th Infantry Brigade . The following year he led his large association against France in the battles at Colombey , Gravelotte and Noisseville . Awarded the Iron Cross II. Class, Below died during the siege of Metz on October 21, 1870 on the Ruhr . He was buried on October 29, 1870 in the Invalidenfriedhof .

family

Below married on October 27, 1852 in Danzig with Therese Mauve (1823-1895), daughter of the tax director of West Prussia , Karl Christian Mauve (1782-1863). After her death she was also buried in the Berlin Invalidenfriedhof. The following children were born from the marriage:
