The Roman walls in Kempten (lat. Cambodunum) could be identified as a manor based on the investigations . This was on the connecting road that connected the upper Lake Zurich with Vitudurum (today Oberwinterthur ). The settlement was founded around 50 AD and existed until the first half of the 4th century. The residents of the complex are likely to have mainly benefited from through traffic (hostel, horse changing station or restaurant ).

In 1321, Count Johannes von Habsburg sold the bailiwick of the Kelnhof Kempten to his servant Hermann von Hinwil.

The former high court rule of Kempten belonged to County Kyburg. After the court lords and local lords of the Barons of Kempten died out, around 1400 the rule of Kempten passed to Gaudenz von Hofstetten, through his daughter to the Blarer von Wartensee family. Several times the rule was broken up into shares and came into the possession of different families. Around 1629 part of the rule and castle of Kempten came to the Junker Schmid von der Kugel, a noble family from Zurich who named themselves Junker Schmid von Kempten after their property. During this time, too, the rule was divided several times to different families. Junker Hans Schmid von Kempten (+1804) was the first to combine all of the ownership interests in one hand. It remained in the possession of the noble Schmid family from Zurich until the Kempten court was dissolved in 1798.

Kempten Castle

The Kempten mill is first mentioned in 1540. Two Rieter Francis turbines once powered the mill and later the sawmill . The main mill building was built in 1807 after a fire. After another fire in 1987 and the subsequent restoration, the building presents itself in its current form.

The Gasthof zum Ochsen is located at the important crossroads (Ochsenkreuzung) in Kempten, where the connections Pfäffikon ZH - Hinwil - Rapperswil SG and Wetzikon - Bäretswil - Wald ZH intersect. In 1531, following the morality mandate issued by the Zurich Council, the Landvogteiamt and district court Grüningen ZH designated three inns for the area of Wetzikon, including one in Kempten, the Zanggers Haus. In 1583 the council in Zurich confirmed these inns and designated the one in Kempten as "ox".

In 1884 the Kempten volunteer fire brigade was founded in the Metzg restaurant. Of the 27 founding members, 17 worked as embroiderers or master embroiderers . At the turn of the century, the embroidery profession experienced an unexpected boom. The products were sold all over the world. The fire services in Kempten were in poor condition until the association was founded. The tools were stored in the barns around the ox. There was no fire water in the lower part of the village . After years of dispute over the location, the civil parishes of Kempten and Kempten Burg decided to build the current fire station. When the Wetziker water supply was also being expanded around 1900, the lack of fire water was also eliminated thanks to the new hydrants. The volunteer fire brigade was independent until 1913. At the decision of the Wetzik community assembly, the premises and equipment belonging to the civil communities were transferred to the political community of Wetzikon without compensation.

In 1903, the Wetzikon-Meilen-Bahn started operating between the Zurich Oberland and Lake Zurich . Although the railway was well frequented, it was not possible to carry out the necessary renovations. The short section from Meilen SBB to the ship station had to be discontinued as early as 1931 , followed by the Kempten – Wetzikon SBB route, which was converted to bus in 1939. In 1946 the Zurich electorate decided to convert the three Oberland railways UOe, UeBB and WMB to buses.

The Chämptnerbach rises in the Allmen area above Bäretswil, flows through Kempten and the Ausliker Ried and is the only tributary that flows into the Pfäffikersee . During the floods of 1977 and 1984, the brook carried considerable amounts of debris and driftwood with it and caused major floods.
