License plate (Mexico)
License plate from 1969 to 1998
The Mexican license plates used to consist of a combination of letters and numbers that did not contain any reference to regional origin. Under this combination, however, there is a combination of letters in smaller font that indicates the state and the letters MEX for Mexico; earlier also the year of issue.
License plate from 1998 until today
States
The newer license plates introduced in 1998 contain - with the exception of the Federal District - three letters and four digits, which from 1998 were initially affixed to the license plates in the form AAA9999 without any space between them. Hyphens were added later: AAA-99-99. The license plates contain the full name of the state. In addition, the identification number of each state is shown in small lower case in different places on the signs.
Federal District
The current license plates of the Federal District have a 09 as the identification number. They have three digits and three letters, separated by a hyphen, of the type 999-AAA (until 2001: 999 AAA) .
