The current Nigerian license plates were introduced in 1992 and revised in 2011. The plates are based in size and design on the US license plates . Along with Liberia, Nigeria is one of the few countries in Africa that does not (no longer) use the usual European format.
The signs are usually white and labeled in blue. In the upper left corner is the Nigerian flag or national coat of arms . To the right of it appears the corresponding state and its motto, at the bottom of the shield is the full country name ( English Federal Republic of Nigeria ). The actual combination initially consists of three letters that indicate the local government area in which the vehicle is registered. After a narrow hyphen, there are three digits and two more letters. In the background are the outlines of Nigeria. Before 2011, the three region letters were at the end of the sign and the outlines were missing. These signs are still valid until June 30, 2014. Custom license plates
are also available. Commercially used vehicles have a red lettering, administrative vehicles have green letters.

With diplomatic license plates the background is red, the writing is white. They show up to three digits, followed by the letters CD or CMD in front of a sequential number. CORPS DIPLOMATIQUE will appear in place of the state . Consular corps vehicles have blue license plates with the letters CC and CORPS CONSULAIRE .

Before the introduction of the current system, black license plates based on the British and French models were used.

The nationality symbol of Nigeria was originally WAN for English West Africa Nigeria and was also replaced by NGR in 1992 .
