Kim Ga-young (born January 13, 1983 in Seoul ) is a South Korean pool player . She was twice world champion in the 9-ball discipline (2004, 2006) and 10-ball world champion in 2012 .

Career

singles

Kim Ga-young began at the age of twelve years with the billiards . Her father, who runs a billiard room, brought her to this. She initially played carom and switched to pool after about three years . She achieved her first major success at an international tournament in 2001 when she finished fourth at the Amway World Open . In August 2001 she took part in the World Games , where billiards was part of the program for the first time, and was eliminated from the 9-ball competition in the round of 16 against the later gold medalist Jeanette Lee . In 2002 she took part in professional tournaments in the USA for the first time and reached ninth place at the BCA Open . In 2003 she won the Virginia State 9-Ball Championship and moved into the final at the US Open , in which she was defeated by Karen Corr . In 2004 Kim turned pro. In October 2004 she won her first tournament victory on the WPBA tour at the US Open . In the same year she became a 9-ball world champion by beating Liu Shin-mei in the final . In 2005 she finished second at the Amway World Open and fifth at the US Open. In November 2005 she won the International Tournament of Champions and the National 9-Ball Championship of the WPBA. In March 2006 she won the 9-Ball World Championship as the defending champion, again in the final against Liu Shin-mei . At the National 9-Ball Championship 2006 she lost in the final against Allison Fisher . In December 2006, she won the silver medal in 8-ball at the Asian Games after losing to Lin Yuan-chun in the final .

In 2007 Kim achieved the second tournament victory on the WPBA tour at the Carolina Classic with a 7: 6 final victory against the Chinese Pan Xiaoting . In the same year she also finished second in the Florida Classic and third in the National 9-Ball Championship. At the 9-Ball World Cup in 2007 , she was eliminated in the quarter-finals. A year later she made it to the final and was defeated by Lin Yuan-chun from Taiwan. In addition, she finished third at the 2008 San Diego Classic and second at the BCA Open. In July 2009 she was eliminated again in the first round in her second participation in the World Games , she was defeated by the Norwegian Line Kjørsvik 6: 9. At the 10-Ball World Championship , which was held for the first time in 2009 , she was eliminated in the round of 16, the 9-Ball World Championship ended for her after the round of 32. On the WPBA tour she won two tournaments in 2009: The US Open, where she won the second time after 2004, and the Colorado Classic.

In March 2010, Kim lost to her compatriot Cha Yu-ram in the final of the Amway WPA World Open . Two months later she took part in the World Pool Masters for the first time and was eliminated in the preliminary round. At the US Open 2010 she managed to defend her title with a 9: 8 final win over Karen Corr. A few days later she reached the quarter-finals at the 9-Ball World Cup . In October she won the International Tournament of Champions for the second time. At the 10-ball world championship in 2010 she reached the final, in which she had to admit defeat to the Austrian Jasmin Ouschan . At the 2010 Asian Games , she won the silver medal in 8-ball singles after losing to Liu Shasha in the final . In January 2011 she finished fifth at the WPBA Masters . In March she won the Amway Cup by beating Chen Siming 10-8 in the final . In the final of the US Open, however, she lost 4: 7 to Englishwoman Allison Fisher. After she was eliminated in the round of 16 at the 9-ball World Cup 2011 , she reached the semi-finals at the 10-ball World Cup . In November 2011 Kim won the WPBA Tour Championship .

At the WPBA Masters 2012 she reached third place. At the Amway Cup 2012 she was eliminated as defending champion in the quarter-finals against Jasmin Ouschan. At the 9-Ball World Cup in 2012 she was only just defeated by the eventual world champion Kelly Fisher (8: 9) in the round of 32. In August 2012, she became 10-ball world champion with a 10: 5 final victory over Chen Siming . A month later she won the International Tournament of Champions for the third time. In 2013 Kim won the WPBA Masters and the Ultimate 10-Ball Championship . At the Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games 2013 she won the bronze medal. At the World Games 2013 , she reached the final of the 9-ball competition and was defeated by the Taiwanese Chou Chieh-yu only 8: 9. At the 9-ball World Cup , she was eliminated in the round of 16. At the World Pool Masters 2013 , she lost her opening game 2-8 against Canadian Alex Pagulayan . In November 2013 she was eliminated 4-8 against Yu Han at the 10-Ball World Cup in the round of 16 .

In early 2014, Kim won the WPBA Masters for the second time in a row. In June of the same year she reached the finals of the China Open and lost to the Chinese Yu Han 5: 9. At the 9-Ball World Cup in 2014 , she was eliminated in the semi-finals 7: 9 against future world champion Liu Shasha after defeating defending champion Yu Han 9: 8 in the quarter-finals. In December 2014 she won the International Pool Championship. In February 2015 Kim lost the final of the WPBA Masters against Jasmin Ouschan. In July 2015 she won the China Open by beating Fu Xiaofang 9: 6 . A few weeks later she won the International Tournament of Champions for the fourth time. At the 9-Ball World Cup in 2015, she lost to Chinese Gao Meng in the round of 16 . In November 2015 she won the All Japan Championship by beating Chihiro Kawahara 9-2 in the final .

At the beginning of 2016, Kim finished fifth at the WPBA Masters. In March she won the first ever WPBA Rivers US Open. In the final she defeated the American Monica Webb 2-0 (in sets). A few days later she reached the quarter-finals of the Chinese 8-Ball World Championship . At the China Open 2016 , Kim was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Wang Xiaotong . In October she reached the final of the Tornado Open and lost to Kelly Fisher from England. At the 9-ball world championship in 2016 , she was eliminated in the quarterfinals 6: 9 against future world champion Yu Han.

Kim has participated in the World Cup of Pool three times so far . In 2008 , together with Lim Yun-mi, she achieved a first round win against last year's finalists Mika Immonen and Markus Juva . Then they lost to the Italians Bruno Muratore and Fabio Petroni in the round of 16 . After she was eliminated with Lim in the first round against the Chinese team in 2009 , Kim formed the South Korean team with Cha Yu-ram in 2010 , which was eliminated against Italy in the first round.

At the team world championship she was part of the South Korean squad twice. With the team she reached the second round in 2012 . In 2014 the preliminary round followed.
