Kissin U ( English for kissing you is) the first single of the US singer Miranda Cosgrove and the only on their debut album Sparks Fly . The single was released by Dr. Luke produced and written by him, HKT, Claude Kelly and Cosgrove. It was released on March 22, 2010 for download and on May 11, 2010 for radio stations. It is Cosgrove's first official release, having recorded soundtracks for several of her films and series, including iCarly and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs .

The song received critical acclaim from music critics and hit the charts. It is Cosgrove's most successful song to date and was her first to impact US radio stations, where it entered the top 20 pop music charts. The download was also successful, so that it made it into the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart, but also into international charts, including in Germany and Austria.

Miranda Cosgrove (2010)

Kissin U was announced as the main single from a future untitled album in late February 2010. The pre-release took place on March 12, 2010 in the radio show On Air with Ryan Seacrest , on March 22, 2010 the single was released on iTunes . In an MTV interview, Cosgrove said:

“[…] The song's about your first love or thinking you're falling in love, so it's just kind of a really happy, sweet song. I did write it about a guy, and I'm afraid he might have heard it and he's going to figure it out! ”

In the same interview Cosgrove announced that the song they titled their debut album Sparks Fly (German: sparks fly ) inspired: "The reason why I called it Sparks Fly [is because] these are the first two words, that you hear when you play my album. ”On June 29, 2010 a remix EP was released as a download, which contains three remixes of the song. The first track of the EP, the Jason Nevins remix of the song, was played by some US radio stations instead of the original version.

Kissin U was referred to as a bubblegum , but the single also includes drums and bass guitars . The lyrics are about love and relationship and the feeling Cosgrove has when she kisses her boyfriend. In their first review of the single, commonsensemedia wrote about the lyrics: “Young love can be innocent, sweet and uncontrollable. It can also be incredibly annoying when pulled to the super-cute extreme. There we are with this single. Lovebirds who are not dulled by disappointments in love can celebrate the true pop sounds and Cosgrove's boundless enthusiasm here. The rest of us will get a headache from rolling our eyes all the time. After listening, you will forever understand the meaning of bubblegum. "

On the other hand, portraitmagazine praised both the lyrics and the music of the song: “Kissin U was the first single on the album and it's not that bad. The single received mixed to positive reviews, J! -ENT said: The song is "well produced, well sung and has this sing / song style similar to Taylor Swift , but with rock music." The song also shows that Cosgrove has potential became a music artist. Idolator.com also praised it, comparing it to Kesha's releases : “[Kissin U] is a peppy, if average, pop song - not terribly exciting or daring, but after a lot of listening, you see yourself doing it Sing along with the choir. Musicrevies10 had a less positive opinion of the melody and the lyrics: “Cosgrove's debut single outside of iCarly and the Nickelodeons machine is Kissin U, a harmless pop number that is easy to catch. Though Cosgrove fits the pop / rock vibe if you want a young pop / rock number, Disney's Demi Lovato has a lot more substance and scope. Kissin 'U Playing It Safe should pass as a mediocre hit, but it doesn't break new ground. But at least it works. "

Commercial win

Kissin U ranked 66th on the Billboard Hot Digital Songs list for the first week it was listed. The following week it fell off the list, but later came back in 54th place, making it 87th on the Billboard Hot 100. There, too, it dropped out the following week, but later made it to 54th place. The song reached number 88 on Bill Lamb's List of Top 100 Songs in 2010.

It's also Cosgrove's first song to hit the charts internationally. In the German single charts it reached 82nd place in the first week and later as the top position 67th. In the Austrian singles charts it reached 57th place in the first week, later 54th place.

Kissin U was awarded gold by the Recording Industry Association of America on January 14, 2011 for sales of over 500,000 copies.

Promotion and performances

To promote her album, Cosgrove Kissing U sang live during the opening act for the Kids Choice Awards . Nickelodeon also showed a special called 7 Secrets: Miranda Cosgrove on April 24, 2010 . The half-hour broadcast revealed information about her, including how she got into the music business. In the days after the album was released, she made several appearances, including in a Toys “R” Us in New York . In the summer of 2010 she performed on several radio concerts and on September 6, 2010 she sang Kissin U , BAM and a cover version of the Sugababes song About You Now on the Today Show .

Cosgrove named their Dancing Crazy Tour after their second single Dancing Crazy , which was written by Avril Lavigne and appeared on Cosgrove's second EP High Maintenance on March 15, 2011 . The tour began on January 24th and ended on February 24th, 2011 and included appearances in house-of-blues locations including Houston, Texas and Anaheim, California. Further appearances took place in theaters in, among others, Atlanta (Georgia), Tampa and Orlando (both Florida).

Music video

The music video was shot in Santa Monica, California and released on March 19, 2010. The director took Alan Ferguson . The video shows Cosgrove singing and walking on the beach while meeting her friend who is a street performer. You go to his house and there she sees the pictures he has painted. He also tries to teach her to draw. Later he washes his car in front of her house, she sprays him wet with the garden hose and he tries to catch her. They are later seen at a party where it looks like they are kissing. When she wakes up in the morning, she looks out the window and sees a drawing of a butterfly on the sidewalk with pictures of the two of them in its wings.
