Klaus Schwabe (born September 8, 1939 in Unterweißbach ; † October 11, 2017 in Leipzig ) was a German sculptor and graphic artist .

Life

From 1953 to 1956 Klaus Schwabe completed an apprenticeship as a ceramic sculptor in Sitzendorf, which is next to his birthplace . 1956-1960 followed a study at the technical school for applied arts in Leipzig, among others with Hellmuth Chemnitz . This qualification entitles him to study at a university, which Schwabe attended from 1960 to 1965 at the Dresden University of Fine Arts . Here he was a student of Walter Arnold , Gerd Jaeger , Hans Steger and Herbert Naumann, among others .

From 1965 he worked as a freelance sculptor in Leipzig . From 1969 to 1972 he taught sculptural design at the evening academy of the Leipzig School of Graphics and Book Art (HGB).

At the age of 31, he won, together with Frank Ruddigkeit and Rolf Kuhrt, with the monumental relief "Aufbruch" (Marx relief), the competition for the artistic design of the Karl Marx University Leipzig against Bernhard Heisig, among others .

From 1972 he was at the HGB, specializing in painting and graphics, lecturer for sculptural design. In 1983 Schwabe received a senior assistant position at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden, where he was appointed lecturer in 1984 and professor in 1986. From 1983 to 1993 he led a sculpture class at the Dresden University. His students included Gudrun Oltmanns , Thomas Reichstein , Holger Lippmann , Steffen Bachmann , Jens Engelhardt and Ingo Garschke . From 1993 Schwabe worked freelance in Leipzig again.

Schwabe was a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR , from 1979 to 1991 chairman of the sculptors section and from 1988 vice-president of the association.

His grave is in the Leipzig south cemetery .
