The Kohlberg , also called Sugar Loaf , is 633  m above sea level. NHN a striking elevation of the Kohlwald ridge in the Fichtelgebirge . It is located near Arzberg in Upper Franconia in the Bavarian district of Wunsiedel in the Fichtelgebirge , is forested and consists of quartz phyllite .

The Kohlberg rises in the southeast part of the Fichtelgebirge, on the western edge of the Kohlwald and in the east of the Fichtelgebirge Nature Park . Its summit is 1.7 km south of the center of Arzberg and 1.8 km north-northeast of the Haid district . To the northeast the landscape leads over a 578  m high mountain saddle with the junction of the district road  13 leading to Seedorf from the state road 2716 (Arzberg– Konnersreuth ) to the Sieben-Linden-Berg ( Lindenberg ; 643  m ).

On the natural environment main unit High Fichtelgebirge (no. 394) belonging carbon Berg, parts of the extending protected landscape Fichtelgebirge ( CDDA -No 395957;. Expelled 1990; 627.0991  square kilometers large).

Beyond the federal highway 303, which runs to the west, there is another Kohlberg ( 528  m ) in the Arzberg district of Garmersreuth , 3.7 km away .

Waters

The mountain is passed in the northwest and north by the Röslau and in the south and west by its tributary Feisnitz , which flows through the Feisnitz reservoir ( Feisnitz reservoir or Haid reservoir ) located at the southwestern foot of the mountain .

history

The mountain name Kohlberg comes from the former coal piles for iron smelting in Arzberg. In the vernacular of the mountain because of the former is smuggling of sugar on the 1792 running until 1810 at the foot of the mountain border between Bavaria and Prussia also "Sugar" called.

Waldenfelswarte

The Waldenfelswarte observation tower and a non-managed refuge of the Fichtelgebirgsverein have stood on the Kohlberg summit since 1961 . In the spring of 2017, the control room was increased from originally 20 m to 32 m with a new foundation and new base tower due to the severe obstructions to the view due to the growth of trees. This makes it one of the highest observation towers in the Fichtel Mountains.

From the tower it is possible in good weather to see the Czech Republic , the Vogtland and even parts of the Ore Mountains .
