occupation

Korczak is a German-Polish feature film directed by Andrzej Wajda from 1990.

action

The film is set in Warsaw during World War II in 1942 . He tells the last few weeks in the life of the Jewish-Polish doctor, children's book author and educator Janusz Korczak . Korczak runs an orphanage he founded. After the Warsaw Ghetto was established , his orphanage with the Jewish children also had to move to the Ghetto. In the ghetto, too, he sacrificed himself for his children. He looks after around 200 Jewish children under the most adverse circumstances. Even in these times of extreme need, he teaches children that they must shape their lives independently. Under his guidance, the children choose a children's government in order to better organize themselves. Korczak collects for the children from the Jews who still have something in the ghetto. In August 1942 the Nazis begin to transport Jews from the ghetto to extermination camps . Korczak's 200 children are also to be transported away. Shortly before the evacuation, Korczak was given the opportunity to leave the ghetto with a Swiss passport. But Korczak refuses to leave his children and climbs with them into the freight wagons that are going to the Treblinka extermination camp .

Reviews

"In almost documentary black and white images, underlaid with authentic shots, the film draws an impressively played portrait of a person who educates the children entrusted to him in justice, brotherhood and tolerance even in the most difficult times."

“Despite some objections, the film is a godsend for work at school. Wajdas film should be used for the lesson, regardless of whether history, ethics, pedagogy or current affairs are on the program. "
