The Kosmosradweg is a cycle path that opens up part of the Vulkaneifel on an almost incline-free route.

It connects the Eifel town of Daun with Meerfeld and the largest Eifelmaar , the Meerfelder Maar . In addition to the natural landscape of the region, it offers an insight into our solar system and the cosmos . He tries to convey a feeling for the gigantic distances and periods of time in the universe that surrounds us. The path is divided into two areas. A planetary path on a scale of 1: 500 million is laid out between the Daun spa gardens and the Bleckhausener Mühle , one meter of the path thus corresponds to 500,000 km in the solar system. In the second section between the bridge at the Bleckhausener Mühle, which leads over the Kleine Kyll , and the Meerfelder Maar, the routes no longer correspond to distances, but to periods of time: each meter represents three million years. The time from the Big Bang to today is demonstrated.

The family-friendly route is uniformly marked in both directions with the bike path logo.

Daun – Meerfeld route

The route starts in the spa gardens of Daun and ends directly at the Maare-Mosel cycle path . It leads over the Daun districts of Gemünden, with the Gemündener Maar , and Pützborn via Niederstadtfeld to Oberstadtfeld . From Oberstadtfeld to Bleckhausener Mühle , which lies between Schutz and Meerfeld , the route runs parallel to the Kleiner Kyll . After the mill it is only a good five kilometers to Meerfeld and the maar there. The nearby Eifel town of Manderscheid with its castles is only six kilometers from the mill via the L16 state road.

Landscape and culture

The landscape through which the Kosmosradweg leads is characterized by its volcanic character. 2.5 km to 3.5 km south-east of the starting point Daum are the so-called Dauner Maars, three directly adjacent maars that are only separated by their tuff walls; the Gemündener Maar , the Weinfelder Maar and the Schalkenmehrener Maar . The district and spa town of Daun is dominated by the Daun Castle and also houses the Eifel volcano museum . The route leads past the Gemündener Maar through small Eifel villages along the Kleine Kyll to the Bleckhausener Mühle . After leaving the Kleine Kyll, the Eifel's largest maar, the Meerfelder Maar , is reached at the destination . A detour to the Eifel town of Manderscheid, which is only a few kilometers away, is worthwhile, because here you can see the two Manderscheid castle ruins Oberburg and Niederburg as well as the Maarmuseum .

The sections on the Daun - Bleckhausener Mühle and Bleckhausener Mühle - Meerfeld sections modulate aspects of the universe, distance and time, and offer interested cyclists a lot of information on these topics. In addition, information about the Vulkaneifel is offered on the information boards .

Train and bus connections

The " Regioradler Vulkaneifel " Regioline 500 bus line runs between Cochem on the Moselle and Gerolstein in the Vulkaneifel and also connects Ulmen and Daun along the way. While the RegioLinie 300 line operates the route along the Maare-Mosel cycle path as a cyclist bus between Bernkastel , Wittlich and Daun. These buses run daily from April 1st to November 1st and have space for 22 bicycles.

On the Kaisersesch - Daun - Gerolstein line of the former Eifelquerbahn , rail buses and reconditioned passenger trains of the Vulkan-Eifel-Bahn (VEB) operated from 2000 to 2013 . The two-hour operation was limited to the season from May to October on weekends and holidays. There were stops on this route in the towns of Dockweiler and Rengen.

Connecting cycle paths

Kalkeifel-Radweg and Kosmosradweg as well as the Mineralquellen-Route are important longitudinal and cross connections as well as additions to the Kylltal-Radweg , the Maare-Mosel-Radweg and the Ahr-Radweg . The Kalkeifel cycle path leads north from the Kylltal cycle path to the Ahr cycle path. While the mineral springs route connects the Ahr cycle path with the Maare-Mosel cycle path and the Eifel-Ardennes cycle path . Beyond Daun, the Kosmosradweg as a connection to the Maare-Mosel-Radweg and the Eifel-Ardennen-Radweg extends the cycle path network of the region.
