The mineral springs route is a cycle path that connects the Ahr cycle path with the Maare-Mosel cycle path and thus the Liesertal . Before Niederehe , coming from the Ahr valley , it branches off from the Kalkeifel cycle path and leads in a hilly manner to Daun in the Vulkaneifel . With only a moderate incline, it overcomes the watershed between the Rhine with the Ahr as a tributary and the Moselle into which the Lieser flows. The cycle route is also manageable for recreational cyclists. The route is uniformly marked in both directions with the bike path logo. The route is not suitable for inline skaters as it is only partially paved.
Route Niederehe - Daun
From the Ahr valley at 320 m to the watershed between the Rhine and Moselle at 583 m , which overlaps behind the town of Dockweiler , there are around 260 meters of altitude to be mastered with a moderate incline. The junction from the Kalkeifel cycle path to the mineral spring route is at an altitude of approx. 420 m . The route is on car-free cycle and farm roads and partly on unpaved forest paths.
After branching off from the Kalkeifel cycle path, the route continues along the Ahbach via Oberehe-Stroheich with the Oberehe Castle and Dreis-Brück , where the Ahbach is left to Dockweiler . On the part of the route, the path passes the Vulkania spring and curves around the dry maar Dreiser Weiher . After crossing the watershed between the Rhine and the Moselle, the route then descends steadily via Rengen to Daun. In Daun, the route connects to the Maare-Mosel-Radweg, which continues from here on a disused railway line to the Moselle, the Kosmos-Radweg Kleine Kyll and the international Eifel-Ardennen-Radweg .
Landscape and culture
The route starts in the Kalkeifel and leads past Dreis-Brück , the center of mineral springs, to the town of Daun in the Vulkaneifel . The Kalkeifel is part of the Northern Eifel and lies between the Ahr and the Moselle. In the east it is bounded by the Hocheifel and in the west by the High Fens . In the slipstream of the Rureifel , the High Fens and the Hocheifel, the Kalkeifel is a warm and dry landscape in which you can find plants that are usually found in southern latitudes. While the landscape around Daun is shaped by its volcanic character. 2.5 km to 3.5 km south-east of the city center of Daun are the so-called Dauner Maars, three directly adjacent maars that are only separated by their tuff walls; the Gemündener Maar , the Weinfelder Maar and the Schalkenmehrener Maar .
The district and spa town, which has mineral springs, is dominated by the Daun Castle and also houses the Eifel volcano museum .
Train and bus connections
Rail buses and reconditioned passenger trains of the Vulkan-Eifel-Bahn (VEB) have been running on the Kaisersesch - Daun - Gerolstein line of the former Eifelquerbahn since 2000 . Rail bus operations between Kaisersesch and Gerolstein have been discontinued since 2012.
The " Regioradler Vulkaneifel " RegioLine 500 bus line runs between Cochem on the Moselle and Gerolstein in the Vulkaneifel and also connects Ulmen and Daun along the way. While the RegioLinie 300 line serves as a cycle bus between Bernkastel , Wittlich and Daun, the route along the Maare-Mosel cycle path. These buses run daily from April 1st to November 1st and have space for 22 bicycles.
Connecting cycle paths
Kalkeifel-Radweg and Kosmosradweg as well as the Mineralquellen-Route are important longitudinal and cross connections as well as additions to the Kylltal-Radweg , the Maare-Mosel-Radweg and the Ahr-Radweg . The Kalkeifel cycle path leads north from the Kylltal cycle path to the Ahr cycle path. While the mineral springs route connects the Ahr cycle path with the Maare-Mosel cycle path and the Eifel-Ardennes cycle path . Beyond Daun, the Kosmosradweg as a connection to the Maare-Mosel-Radweg and the Eifel-Ardennen-Radweg extends the cycle path network of the region.
