history
Kossenblatt was first mentioned in 1208 as a Coscenblot.
In the next centuries the place name was given in the spellings Kozzenblot (1307), Kossinblot (1440/41) and Cossenblad (1724). There are several theories about the naming of the place. While there is no agreement on the meaning of the first part of the name, the derivation of the "-blatt" from the Sorbian word błoto for "swamp" is undisputed.
Sorbian was spoken in the area around Kossenblatt until the beginning of the 19th century.
From 1541 (until 1736) at the latest, the neighboring villages of Werder and Briescht belonged to the Kossenblatt manor . On the Spree island next to the manor house built before 1581, Kossenblatt Castle was built between 1705 and 1712 . In 1736 the castle was acquired by King Friedrich Wilhelm I , who left it to his son August Wilhelm as a summer residence.
On July 5, 2008, the 800th anniversary of the town was celebrated with a pageant.
