Türkmenbaşy ( Russian Туркменбашы Turkmenbaschy ; until 1993 Krasnowodsk / Красноводск) is a port city in western Turkmenistan in the Balkans Province . It is the end point of the Trans Caspian Railway .

Türkmenbaşy is located on a bay on the eastern edge of the Caspian Sea .

The city has around 73,800 inhabitants (2010). The majority of the population consists of Turkmen , Azerbaijanis , Armenians and Russians .

history
In 1717 a Russian settlement was founded on the site of today's city, but it was abandoned after a few years. After the place had been abandoned for more than 150 years, Krasnovodsk was founded in its place in 1869 . In 1896 it became a city. On November 21, 1939, Krasnovodsk Oblast was founded with the city center. Krasnovodsk had about 21,000 inhabitants at that time, this number rose to almost 59,000 by 1989. After Turkmenistan gained independence in 1991, the city became part of the newly established Balkan Province , the provincial capital of which is now in Balkanabat . In 1993 the Turkmen dictator Saparmyrat Nyýazow Krasnovodsk was renamed Turkmenbaşy after his honorary title .

The new port of Türkmenbaşy has existed since 2018 . From here there are ferry connections across the Caspian Sea to Baku and Astrakhan , which can also be used to transfer freight wagons in train traffic .

Türkmenbaşy station has been the starting point for the Trans-Caspian Railway to Samarkand , Buchoro (Bukhara) and Tashkent since the 1880s . The railway line is the main line of the Turkmen Railway .

Türkmenbaşy is connected to the capital Ashgabat by an airline .
economy
The economic basis of the city is petroleum processing, the food industry (especially fishing), light industry and shipyards.
The Awaza tourist area is located near the city . Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow declared in 2007 that he wanted to turn Turkmenbaşy into a tourist resort, with over 60 modern hotels and a 16 km long coastline on the Caspian Sea. This gigantic project was parodied by the computer game Battlefield: Bad Company , among others .
Culture
In Türkmenbaşy there is a history and a natural history museum. There is a large nature reserve near the city.
In the late spring and summer of 1987, the film Days of Darkness was shot in the city of Krasnovodsk.
