Krasny ( Russian Кра́сный ) is an urban-type settlement and former city in the Smolensk Oblast in Russia with 4,349 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

The place is about 50 km as the crow flies southwest of the Smolensk Oblast Administrative Center and a good 15 km from the state border with Belarus . It is located on the Swinaja, a small river in the catchment area of ​​the Dnieper , from the left bank of which it is about ten kilometers away.

Krasny is the administrative center of the Rajons Krasninski and seat of the municipality Krasninskoje gorodskoje posselenije, (km 4 west) which also includes the villages of Bolshaya Dobraja, Bujanowo (6 km SSW) Chrapowo (8 km south), Kutkowo (4 km south-southeast), Saluschetschje ( 9 km south-southeast) and Sorokino (3 km south) belong.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1165 under the name Krassen , when it was given as a fief to his nephews by the Smolensk Prince Davyd Rostislavich . This year is also celebrated as the founding year of Krasny. Later the Krasnoye shape was also used. During the period of the Russo-Polish Wars in the 17th century, Krasnoje belonged temporarily to Poland-Lithuania before finally becoming part of Russia in 1654.

In 1776 the place received the city charter under the current name form as the administrative seat of a Ujesd of the governorship, later of the Smolensk governorate . During Napoleon's Russian campaign in 1812 , the vicinity of the city was the scene of two battles : during the advance of the French troops to the east on August 2nd ^July. / August 14, 1812 ^greg. in the run-up to the Battle of Smolensk and during their retreat from November 3rd ^July. / November 15th ^greg. until November 6th ^jul. / November 18, 1812 ^greg. .

The economic development in the 19th century stagnated, also because the railway line Moscow  - Warsaw around 1870 passed far from the place on the right of the Dnieper. In 1922 the Ujesd was dissolved, and Krasny again downgraded to the village. In 1929 it became the administrative seat of a newly created Rajons named after him.

During the Second World War , Krasny was again the scene of bitter fighting from 13 to 18 July 1941 in the initial phase of the Kesselschlacht near Smolensk , before it could be captured by the German Wehrmacht . On the night of September 28, 1943, Krasny was retaken by the Red Army as part of the Smolensk Operation .

In 1965 the Krasny received urban-type settlement status.

Regional road 66K-20 from Smolensk leads to Krasny. To the north there is a connection to the federal highway M1 Belarus from Moscow to the Belarusian border via the 66N-1104 at Gussino, 20 km away . The nearest train station is also located there on the Moscow - Smolensk - Minsk line (the border station between Russia and Belarus Krasnoye , which is another 20 km to the west, has no direct connection to Krasny).
