Léon Lemmens (born March 16, 1954 in Boorsem , Maasmechelen , Flanders ; † June 2, 2017 ) was a Belgian Roman Catholic clergyman and auxiliary bishop in Mechelen-Brussels .

Life

Léon Lemmens first attended the boys' seminary and studied Catholic theology at the diocesan seminary and at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven . On July 10, 1977 he was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Hasselt . He then went to the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome for further studies , where he first obtained a licentiate in moral theology and then obtained a Dr. theol. received his doctorate . During this time he also began to get involved in the community of Sant'Egidio .

After Kaplan activities in Genk from 1981 to 1984 he was a professor at the seminary of Hasselt, the rain , he from 1997 by 2004. From 1990 to 1995 he was responsible for vocational ministry in Belgium. He was a member of the national liturgy commission and was Episcopal Vicar for further education, media and culture in the Diocese of Hasselt from 1995 to 1998 . In 1996 he was appointed titular canon and from 1998 to 2004 he was vicar general of the Hasselt diocese.

In 2004 he went to Rome again, where he headed the Romanian seminary for one year. From 2005 he worked for the Congregation for the Eastern Churches . He also led the seminary of the Missionary Society of the Community of Sant'Egidio and was a member of it.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on February 22, 2011 auxiliary bishop in Mechlin-Brussels and titular bishop of Municipa . The Archbishop of Mechlin-Brussels, André-Joseph Léonard , donated him and Jean-Luc Hudsyn and Jean Kockerols, who were both Auxiliary Bishops , episcopal ordination on April 3 of the same year ; Co - consecrators were Godfried Cardinal Danneels , Old Archbishop of Mechlin-Brussels, and Giacinto Berloco , Apostolic Nuncio in Belgium and Luxembourg . As a motto he chose Populum humilem et pauperum ( Bring salvation to the oppressed and poor people ( Ps 18:28  EU )).

Lemmens died of complications from leukemia.
