The BA3-2101 , German transcription WAS-2101 , internationally used transcription VAZ-2101 , is a limousine from the Schiguli series (Russian: Жигули ) manufactured by AwtoWAS . The vehicle is a license replica of the Fiat 124 . Production started on April 19, 1970 and stopped in 1988. Around 4.7 million copies were made. The brand name Lada was used for export , while in the Soviet Union all models were still called Shiguli. In Russian vernacular, at least the limousines of the model series WAS-2101 were called Kopeika (in German Pfennig / Groschen ). Export ceased in 1984. As early as 1979, the WAS-2105 gradually replaced the WAS-2101. A combination version was also created based on the WAS-2101 and has its own type designation: WAS-2102 .

Several prototypes of the WAS-2101 were created, known in Russian as Модификации ("modifications"):

  • WAS-2101 (1970–1988) The first variant, equipped with a 1.2-liter engine with 62 PS (46 kW) (according to GOST standard) and a top speed of 140 km / h with an acceleration of 0–100 km / h in about 22 seconds.
  • WAS-21011 (1974–1981) This modified variant was equipped with a 1.3-liter engine. There were also self-adjusting drum brakes on the rear axle, which were now also installed in the WAS-2101. The headlights have also been improved, while the horns on the bumpers have been eliminated and a rubber strip has been applied the full length of the bumper. The taillights were also redesigned and received an integrated passive reflector, while the WAS-2101 still had a small rectangular part. The windshield water pump in the WAS-21011 was operated with the foot instead of the rubber button on the dashboard compared to the WAS-2101. The dashboard on this model was clad in wood and plastic, and instead of black it was now light gray or white and black. The seats have been made more comfortable and the dashboard lighting has been improved. There was a ventilation grille on each of the C-pillars and four horizontal oval ventilation holes above the front bumper. All these measures were created specifically for export in order to be able to offer the model more competitively, which was also the case initially. In 1979 there were optical revisions for the export models, such as modified exterior mirrors, different ventilation grilles and a revised dashboard. The export name of this model was mostly Lada 1300 .
  • WAS-21013 (1977–1988) A WAS-2101 with the many changes of the WAS-21011 and a modernized 1.2-liter engine, exported as the Lada 1200S.
  • WAS-21016 (1976–1981) Special variant for the Soviet militia with a 1.5-liter engine of the WAS-2103 .
  • WAS-21018 (1978) A WAS-21011 with a rotary engine for the Soviet militia and the KGB with 80 HP (59 kW).
  • WAS-21019 "Arkan" (1983) Also a WAS-21011 with a rotary engine for the Soviet militia and KGB with now 120 HP (88 kW).

description

The WAS-2101 is a four-door notchback sedan with a longitudinally installed front engine and rear-wheel drive. The all-steel body is self-supporting. The chassis with independent suspension at the front and rigid axle at the rear is designed in such a way that driving on poorly asphalted roads is possible. In addition, when designing the WAS-2101, emphasis was placed on passive vehicle safety, which was increasingly the focus of attention in the early 1970s.

landing gear

The front wheels are individually suspended on triangular wishbones of unequal length with coil springs and telescopic shock absorbers. There is also a cross stabilizer . The coil-sprung rear axle is rigid , it is guided with four trailing arms and laterally by a Panhard rod . Hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers are also installed here. The WAS 2101 steel disc wheels size 4½ × 13  in with tires of size 6¼-13 in. The brake system is a hydraulic dual-circuit brake system with 252.7 mm discs front and 250 mm behind drums. The handbrake acts mechanically on the rear wheels. The steering is a worm-roller steering .

engine

Motor WAS-2101

A water-cooled four-cylinder in-line engine with a displacement of 1198 cm 3 is installed. The engine works according to the Otto process , has a carburetor and an overhead camshaft. Measured in accordance with the GOST standard, it develops 62 hp (46 kW).

When designing the engine, attention was paid to ease of maintenance. It has an engine block made of low-alloy cast iron . The pistons have a flat shape. The forged crankshaft has five bearings in aluminum-steel bearings. The counterflow cylinder head is made of cast aluminum with a cylinder head cover made of steel. A cylinder head gasket made of asbestos-containing material is installed between the engine block and the cylinder head . The combustion chambers are completely in the cylinder head and have a wedge-like shape. The cylinder head has an inlet valve and an outlet valve for each combustion chamber. They are operated via rocker arms from the five-bearing camshaft driven by a duplex roller chain. The ignition system works with a conventional ignition distributor and breaker contact.

Powertrain

The torque is transmitted from the engine to the transmission input shaft via a single-plate dry clutch . The gearbox is a fully synchronized four-speed gearbox with helical teeth. The torque is transmitted from the transmission output shaft via a two-part cardan shaft to the rear axle differential and from there to the rear wheels. The gear ratio is 43:10.

body

The WAS-2101 has a self-supporting all-steel body with crumple zones included in the front and rear. It consists of eight main components: the floor panel, the roof, the rear carrier, the front carrier, and two side panels and two front fenders, which are all welded together. There are also four doors, the front-hinged bonnet and the trunk lid. Depending on the load on the components, spot-welded connections (fenders) or welded seams produced with arc welding devices (roof) were set. The body is designed in such a way that it can twist sufficiently well when driving on poor roads, but at the same time offers sufficient rigidity in the area of the passenger cell in the event of an accident. The windshield is made of multilayer safety glass.

inner space

The interior is designed so that the driver sits relatively comfortably and has a good all-round view. All fittings and controls are easily accessible in the driver's field of vision. A glare-free interior mirror as well as seat belts are part of the standard equipment. The ventilation and heating system is very efficient and ensures that the windshield and rear window do not fog up, even at low temperatures. The steering column is a safety steering column that should not penetrate the passenger compartment in the event of an accident.

Remarks

  1. a b The specification of the engine power depends on the standard with which it was measured. In the USSR the GOST standard was common, while in Germany measurements were made according to DIN 70020 and in the USA according to the SAE standard.
