The Laurentius Chapel with the atonement crosses

The Laurentiuskapelle (formerly Lorenzikapelle ) is a Roman Catholic chapel built in 1723 on the Laurentiusberg in Tauberbischofsheim and is consecrated to St. Laurentius of Rome . She belongs to the pastoral care unit Tauberbischofsheim in the deanery Tauberbischofsheim .

history

The Laurentius Chapel in Tauberbischofsheim was financed by Simon Dürr and inaugurated on August 10, 1723. According to the parishes, a miracle should have occurred here: while the litany was being sung, the statue of Laurentius rose on top of the altar and bowed as a tribute to thanks. The first renovation of the chapel took place in 1748, which was carried out by Hanß Michel Fröhling "Burger und Dungermeister". In 1892 it was given its present form by the parish priest Schott, including an altar with an iron grating.

During the German War , the Laurentius Chapel was, among other things, the scene of the battle near Tauberbischofsheim . The chapel was also a frequent destination for corridor processions (St. Mark's procession).

During the First World War there was a prisoner of war camp next to the chapel , in which mainly Russians and French were stationed. These helped the farmers with their agriculture, but the open space was also used to grow their own vegetables, as well as to raise goats and rabbits, in order to supplement their own camp catering.

After the building was considered to be in need of renovation over the years, the chapel was completely renovated and reopened on April 28, 1985. As the Laurentius Chapel has been the victim of vandalism in the form of graffiti and damage to the plaster and windows in recent years , it was temporarily closed. After renewed renovation work, it celebrated its reopening on July 24, 2015.
