The Peterskapelle (also called the chapel in front of the gate in old documents) is a Roman Catholic sacred building in Tauberbischofsheim, built in 1180 .

history

The Peterskapelle , which is dedicated to the apostle Peter as namesake, was built in 1180. It is the oldest building in the city, dating from Romanesque times. Called in old documents as the chapel in front of the gate , it was the cemetery chapel in the Petersfriedhof from around 1400, which housed the dead of the city until the construction of the current cemetery opposite the railway line in 1853.

Today the church is a cultural monument . From the old cemetery there are still many gravestones that were used during the renovation by the “Förderverein Peterskapelle Tauberbischofsheim e. V. ”found its place outside as well as inside the church since 1999. The mayor and hospital administrator Peter Erstenberger, whose tombstone is the oldest surviving tombstone in St. Peter's Church, is seen as the main sponsor of the church.

The non-vaulted hall building has a retracted rectangular choir, which opens into the nave in a broad and compact arch . The preserved altar group inside the church with three early baroque altars from the 17th century and the choir with its ceiling stucco from 1624, which shows rich fittings from the Renaissance period, are a special feature in the entire district. Today the church is also rented out for smaller concerts and exhibitions.
