Lee Dong-gook (born April 29, 1979 in Pohang ) is a South Korean soccer player who currently plays as a striker for the South Korean club Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors .
Since he was young, Lee played in his hometown of Pohang. At the local club Pohang Steelers , he began his professional career in 1998. At 19, he was part of the squad of the South Korean national team at the 1998 World Cup in France. At the world tournament, however, he only made one use: In the preliminary round defeat against the Netherlands (0: 5), he was substituted on in the 77th minute when the score was 0: 3. Even he could not prevent his country from being eliminated in the group stage. But Lee did not let this setback set him back and was ultimately also at the 2000 Asian Cup . After strong performances at the tournament, the Bundesliga club Werder Bremen noticed him, who arranged a loan deal with Pohang. But in the year that he played in Bremen, he could not convince (also due to injuries) and returned to Pohang.
For the 2002 FIFA World Cup in his homeland Lee was surprisingly not by national coach Guus Hiddink nominated. The reasons given by the Dutchman were that he did not prefer Lee's style of play and accused him of moving too little and bringing him into the game. After the World Cup, he was drafted into national service and played for the Gwangju Sangmu Phoenix military team for two years . In 2004 he returned to his home club Pohang and became a top performer there. He was already considered a firm candidate for the 2006 World Cup , but tore a cruciate ligament shortly before the tournament and had to be replaced. Later that year he made his comeback playing against Ulsan Hyundai Horang-i . In January 2007, the English first division club Middlesbrough FC signed him . He made his Premier League debut on February 24, 2007 against Reading FC . By the end of the 2007/08 season he made a total of 23 games, including 15 substitutions. In the championship games he remained completely without scoring and left England in the summer of 2008 for South Korea.
