from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Leszek Błażyński (born March 5, 1949 in Ełk , † August 6, 1992 in Katowice ) was a Polish boxer . He was the European flyweight amateur boxer champion in 1977 and won bronze medals in the same weight class at the 1972 and 1976 Olympic Games .

Career

Leszek Błażyński completed an apprenticeship as a mechanic in Ełk and began boxing as a teenager at the Mazur Ełk Sports Club . He first appeared in 1967 when he fought his way to the quarter-finals at the Polish senior championship as an 18-year-old in the light flyweight division and only then lost to Marian Trelinski. Leszek Błażyński was very light at a height of 1.65 meters and boxed during his entire career in light flyweight or flyweight (up to 48 kg or 51 kg body weight). After his time at Mazur Ełk, he later boxed at BBTS Wlokniarz Bielska-Biela and Szombierek Bytom .

At the Polish championship in 1968 he was eliminated again in the quarterfinals when he lost to Roman Rozek on points. A year later he was Polish runner-up in the light flyweight division. He lost the final fight against Roman Rożek on points. In 1970 he was absent from the Polish championships due to injury.

1971 Leszek Błażyński was then for the first time Polish flyweight champion by defeating Hubert Skrzypczak . In the same year he then represented Poland at the European Amateur Championship in Madrid . He fought his way into the final with three impressive victories over Zlatko Milosovljevic from Yugoslavia , Viktor Zaporoschets from the Soviet Union and Constantin Gruiescu from Romania , in which he was defeated by local Juan Francisco Rodriguez on points (1: 4 judges' votes). In 1971 he made his first start in the Polish national relay in Sosnowiec in an international match against the USA . He lost it in the flyweight against Gregory Lewis on points. He remained victorious in eleven of the following twelve international matches.

In 1972 Leszek Błażyński was defeated in the Polish flyweight championship against Stanislaw Lechowski, but was still nominated for the Olympic Games that year in Munich . In Munich he fought his way to the semi-finals with three wins, where he was defeated by the Bulgarian Georgi Kostadinow on points and won a bronze medal. Kostadinov then also became Olympic champion .

1973 Leszek Błażyński won his second Polish flyweight championship with a victory over Leszek Borkowski. At the subsequent European Championship in Belgrade, he knocked out Welshman Maurice O'Sullivan in his first fight in the first round, but lost his next fight in the quarter-finals against Nikolai Lodin from the Soviet Union and came in fifth.

In 1974 and 1975, Leszek Błażyński had health problems and only fought a few minor fights. In 1976, however, he celebrated a successful comeback. Although he lost in the Polish flyweight championship this year in the semifinals against Ryszard Czerwinski, but then qualified for a start at the Olympic Games in Montreal . In Montreal he won over Antonio Filho from Brazil , Fazlija Šaćirović from Yugoslavia and Alfredo Perez from Venezuela . In the semifinals, however, as four years ago, he was again the final destination, because he lost here on points against Leo Randolph from the USA (1: 4 judges' votes). This again won a bronze medal .

In 1977 Leszek Błażyński proved again that he is a great boxer, because he became European flyweight champion in Halle an der Saale . It was enough for him to win over Joao Miguel from Portugal , Nuri Eroglu from Turkey and Tkachenko from the Soviet Union , against whom he narrowly but deservedly won with 3-2 judges' votes.

In 1978 he lost at the Polish championship in the semi-finals against Henryk Średnicki . He was then used at the World Championships in Belgrade in bantamweight, because Srednicki started in flyweight. In this weight class he did not feel well and was already defeated in his first fight against Fazlija Šaćirović , with which he missed the last sixteen and ultimately only finished 17th. At the 2nd Feliks Stamm tournament in Warsaw he met Henryk Srednicki again in the final of the flyweight division at the end of 1978, but lost this fight again on points.

After that, Leszek Błażyński's career came to an end. Although he started again at the Polish championship in 1980 and lost in the final of the flyweight against Ryszard Czerwinski on points. But he was no longer nominated for the Olympic Games in Moscow that year.

He declared his final retirement from boxing in 1983. He has contested a total of 317 fights in his career, of which he won 282. He boxed four times and lost 31 fights.

Leszek Błażyński committed suicide in Katowice on August 6, 1992.
