history

History and naming

The medieval Gallus Church in Oberstammheim was first mentioned in a document in 897. To St. Gallus this church was consecrated because the Alamanne Isanhard had given his possessions in Stammheim, Basadingen and Etzwilen to the monastery of St. Gallen including people, cattle, buildings and land in 761 . In 1310 the Romanesque church was completely painted, in 1504 Gothic pointed arch windows were let into the masonry. After the Reformation in Zurich from 1523, the Catholic rite was forbidden in the Zurich subject areas. From then on, the Gallus Chapel was used for Reformed services.

Development and construction history

As part of the freedom of establishment and freedom of religion of the Swiss federal state , the first Catholics moved to the Zürcher Weinland at the end of the 19th century . In order to attend a Catholic service, long journeys had to be made to the Catholic churches of Rheinau , Winterthur or Schaffhausen . That is why a group of Catholics met in Ossingen in 1923 and asked the Bishop of Chur for better pastoral care . Bishop Georg Schmid von Grüneck then commissioned the pastor of St. Marien Winterthur-Oberwinterthur to take care of the Catholics in the Zurich wine region. In 1926, for the first time since the Reformation, a Catholic service was held in the Hirschen inn in Ossingen in the Zürcher Weinland. As early as 1928 the Catholics built a St. Anne's chapel in the western part of the village of Ossingen . In 1932 the Zürcher Weinland received its first Catholic pastor, who first settled in Ossingen and from 1934 in Oberstammheim. He set up a chapel in his home in Oberstammheim and continued to look after the chapel in Ossingen. Since only a few Catholics lived in the Andelfingen area in the 1930s, while there were a number of newly arrived Catholics in Stammheim, the focus of pastoral care shifted to Oberstammheim. In the 1930s, the neighboring properties of the rectory in Oberstammheim could also be acquired for the construction of a church. Since Ossingen was difficult to reach from Andelfingen and Marthalen , the St. Anna chapel turned out to be unfavorably located. The St. Anna chapel in Ossingen was therefore sold and converted into a residential building. As a replacement, the first Catholic church services took place in Kleinandelfingen in the restaurant Zum Bad from 1938. In 1939, a piece of land opposite the Zum Bad restaurant was acquired and a wooden emergency church was built. In the war year 1942, the Marienkirche was built in Oberstammheim with the help of donations. The architect of the church was Arnold Meyer from Hallau . Construction began on August 5, 1941, the foundation stone was laid on October 26, and construction of the church was completed on Whitsun of the following year, May 24, 1942. Another patron of the Church was St. Gallus and St. Anna definitely. In 1971 the rectory in Oberstammheim was renovated and in 1972 the choir of St. Mary's Church was adapted to the requirements of the Second Vatican Council . Since more and more Catholics settled in the region of the district capital Andelfingen, the focus of the parish shifted from the 1960s to Kleinandelfingen, from where pastoral care and parish work has also been organized for Oberstammheim since then. The parish in Feuerthalen, which was named an independent parish in 1966, is a subsidiary parish of the Stammheim-Andelfingen parish. In 2011 these two parishes were combined into a pastoral care room.

The parish of Stammheim-Andelfingen is responsible for the Catholics in the communities of Adlikon , Andelfingen, Benken , Humlikon , Kleinandelfingen, Marthalen, Stammheim , Ossingen , Trüllikon and Truttikon . The pastoral care room with the two parishes of Feuerthalen and Stammheim-Andelfingen is one of the medium-sized Catholic parishes in the canton of Zurich with 4061 members (as of 2014).

The Marienkirche is located on Kirchweg in Oberstammheim and follows the course of this path, which is why the choir of the church faces south-east. The simple, single-nave church with a gabled roof finished and has as a decorative element on the facade of the church tower a representation of St. Gallus with bears. This representation refers to the founding of the oldest church in the Stammertal by the St. Gallen monastery. A staircase leads through a porch into the tower of the church, inside of which another staircase leads to the actual church, which is located on the first floor of the building above the parish hall.

Interior and artistic equipment

In the church, the visitor is initially under the organ gallery, where the font is also located. This arrangement refers to the design of a house of God as a path church , which was customary up to the Second Vatican Council , in which the believer spatially covers the inner path, which comes through baptism and participation in the church service to the chancel with the holy of holies in the tabernacle . The sanctuary stands out from the rest of the worship space by a few steps. Since 1971 there has been a simple wooden altar , an ambo, and a wooden cross on the back wall as well as the tabernacle, which was carried over from the previous interior. The embossed front of the tabernacle shows the Christ monogram as well as the words “The master is there and is calling you.” The glass windows come from the Mäder Zürich workshop and show the following program, starting on the north side of the church from the chancel to the rear:

  • The first window shows a pelican opening its chest with its beak so that its young can drink its blood. In Christian iconography, the pelican is a symbol of Christ. In keeping with this, there is the saying from Jn 6, 56: "Whoever eats my flesh remains in me and I in him."
  • The second window is a round window and shows the four evangelist symbols. The inscription reads: "Go and teach all peoples."
  • The third window contains the symbol of the dove of the Holy Spirit and lists the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit as they are indicated in Isa 11:29: "Wisdom, understanding, advice, strength, science, piety, fear of the Lord."
  • The fourth window contains the sentence from Jn 20:23: “To whom you forgive your sins, they are forgiven.” In the middle of the window are the Mosaic Tables of the Law and the two keys that refer to the papacy .
  • The fifth window on the north wall of the church is at the level of the organ gallery and depicts King David , the prototype for church musicians.
  • On the south side of the church there is the sixth window in the chancel. It was donated by the pastors of the neighboring parishes and contains the following saying from the ordination rite for priests : “The priest should sacrifice, bless, preach, stand and baptize.” A chalice, a godfather, can be found on the window as symbols for the priesthood Missal and a priest stole.
  • The seventh window contains the Christ sign, branches with fruits, the coat of arms of the then Pope Pius XII. as well as wedding rings that are intertwined. The inscription on this window is from Eph 5:32 and reads: "This mystery is great with regard to Christ and the Church."
  • The eighth window shows an oil lamp as well as a jug and the inscription from Jak 4, 14: "If anyone among you is sick, call the priests."
  • The ninth window is dedicated to baptism . It contains the symbols water, fish and cross as well as the inscription from Matthew 28:19: "Baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."
  • On the back wall of the church, the window program is continued with a round window that shows Christ in Brother Klaus' vision with the rays of light pointing inwards and outwards.

Under the organ loft there are four glass windows behind the baptismal font. l. No. The following themes show: Archangel Michael , Mary with the baby Jesus , John the Baptist with the Lamb of God , St. Peter with key and fishing net.
