The 9th stage of the Tour de France 2014 took place on July 13, 2014 and led from Gérardmer over 170 km to Mulhouse . During the course of the stage there was an intermediate sprint after 105 km as well as a mountain classification in the first category, two ratings in the second and three ratings in the third category. This meant that the stage counted as a low mountain range, with 184 riders at the start.

Race course

Tony Martin and Alessandro De Marchi at the foot of the Côte des Cinq Châteaux

Just 15 kilometers after the start, Tony Martin and Alessandro De Marchi pulled away from the field. After driving out for about 40 seconds, a 28-man chasing group formed on the ascent to Col du Wettstein. There was no contender for overall victory in this group. The French Tony Gallopin was the best in the overall standings in eleventh and three and a half minutes behind. The pursuers could not close the gap to the two leaders, but steadily increased the lead over the main field. 59 km before the goal, on the ascent to Le Markstein, Martin von De Marchi stepped away and started a solo journey to the goal. The attack was successful and Martin won his third tour stage (after two victories in the individual time trial in 2011 and 2013) with a 2:45 minute lead over the pursuers. The peloton reached the finish line 7:46 minutes behind. Due to the clear lead Tony Gallopin got the yellow jersey from Vincenzo Nibali , who had to give it up after seven days. In addition to winning the day, Tony Martin also fought for the dotted jersey .
