The 14th stage of the Tour de France 2014 took place on July 19, 2014 and led from Grenoble over 177 km to Risoul . In the course of the stage there was an intermediate sprint after 40 km as well as a mountain classification in the Hors Catégorie and two classifications in the first category. The stage counted as a high mountain stage, 173 riders started.

Race course

Immediately after the start of the stage, Rodríguez , who wore the dotted jersey on behalf of Nibali , attacked and tried in vain to break away from the peloton with Chavanel . This early attack was not rewarded and was neutralized by the field. However, after six kilometers a 40-strong top group formed with the main favorites Nibali and Valverde . This situation, from which drivers like Pinot , Bardet and Schleck were threatened, lasted about ten kilometers and was neutralized by the FDJ and Trek teams .

However, 17 drivers were able to stay ahead and gain a one and a half minute lead in just two kilometers. The group consisted of the following drivers: Nieve, Thomas (Sky), Herrada (Movistar), Majka, Roche (Tinkoff), Sagan, De Marchi (Cannondale), Kruijswijk (Belkin), Riblon (ag2r), Timmer (Giant), Serpa (Lampre), Moinard (BMC), Gautier (Europcar), Edet, Taaramäe (Cofidis) and Yates (Orica). After 24 kilometers, the group was already three minutes ahead. At this point, however , the Astana team took over responsibility in the field and tried to limit the growth of the lead, which they succeeded. During the entire ascent to the first category mountain classification on the Col du Lautaret , the outliers increased their lead to 5:08 minutes. The mountain classification was won by Rodríguez. De Marchi was content with fifth place. In between were Majka, Roche and Serpa. The following sprint classification was won by Sagan.

The first mountain classification of the day represented a turning point in the course of the stage, as the team from Leopold König , Net-App Endura, took over the pace work on the descent and halved the lead of the escape group in the descent. While at the beginning of the ascent to Col d'Izoard Net-App Endura continued to drive pace, they were first replaced by FDJ during the ascent and then by ag2r. Thanks to the work of Thomas, the lead of the escape group grew steadily slowly in the driveway, so that it was 3:05 min at the summit. Rodríguez won the mountain prize ahead of Majka, Nieve, Herrada and Yates.

In the technically demanding upper part of the descent from the only mountain classification of the Hors Catégorie of this stage, the ag2r team attacked and for this reason ordered Riblon back from the escape group so that he could serve as a relay station. Several riders from the group of favorites separated: Nibali, Fuglsang, Scarponi, Valverde, Bardet, Péraud, Pinot and Mollema. Thanks to Riblon, this group quickly gained a lead of 30 seconds over the other riders. However, these were neutralized thanks to a pace dictated by BMC and Lotto Belisol drivers. Although this attack did not change the racing situation between the favorites lastingly, it shortened the lead of the outliers to 1:30 min. After the merger of the two groups of main favorites, the AG2R team still took responsibility in the field, so 15 kilometers from the finish, the distance between outliers and the group yellow jersey was only 1:08 min.

At the beginning of the climb of the first category to Risoul the outliers had a lead of 1:01 min. Right at the beginning of the climb, the outliers attacked each other. After that, only Majka, De Marchi and Rodríguez remained at the front of the race. In the meantime, ag2r continued to lead the peloton in the main field, not only leaving Porte behind, but also Costa and Van Den Broeck. Eight kilometers from the finish, Majka set off for a stage victory with a solo ride, while Rodríguez and De Marchi formed the pursuit duo. A kilometer later, the De Marchi / Rodríguez duo were 19 seconds behind, while the field was 47 seconds behind. Six kilometers from the finish line, the field - still led by ag2r - was 45 seconds behind Majka, while they had almost caught up with the chasing duo.

At the five-kilometer mark, Ben Gastauer , the last ag2r pacemaker, was no longer able to take it. At the same time, Pierre Rolland attacked , but was put back by FDJ. Meanwhile, Van Den Broeck was 2:40 minutes behind Majka and 1:35 minutes on the field. At the four-kilometer mark, Nibali attacked and was only countered by Péraud. The pursuers did not agree and attacked each other. Two kilometers from the finish, Majka had a lead of 39 seconds on the duo Nibali / Péraud and these two drivers again had a lead of 27 seconds on the next chase group, from which Mollema also fell back. Shortly after this group of favorites passed the two kilometer floor, van Garderen attacked again and was only followed by Schleck and the two young French riders Pinot and Bardet. The situation at Flamme Rouge was as follows: Majka was in the lead, 30 seconds ahead of Nibali and Péraud, another 25 seconds later Bardet, Pinot, van Garderen and Schleck followed. 1:13 min behind Majka were Valverde, ten Dam, König and Rolland.

Majka finally won the stage before Nibali, which Péraud sprinted over. In the sprint for fourth place, Pinot Bardet came out on top. The two of them left Van Garderen and Schleck for the last meter. Ten Dam was able to break away from his group again and started almost too Schleck.
