The 3rd stage of the Tour de France 2014 took place on July 7th 2014 and led from Cambridge over 155 km to London . During the course of the stage there was an intermediate sprint after 108 km. The stage counted as a flat stage, with 196 riders at the start.

Race course

Bárta and Bideau during their escape attempt

Given the rather unspectacular profile, the stage remained largely without any major highlights. As on the day before, drivers pulled away from the peloton shortly after the start: Frenchman Jean-Marc Bideau (BSE) and Czech Jan Bárta (TNE) had already gained a lead of around four minutes after 14 kilometers. Before the intermediate sprint after about two thirds of the stage, both had a lead of around two minutes on the peloton. Bideau won the sprint ahead of Bárta. Bryan Coquard (EUC) was first in the main draw , followed by the green jersey wearers Peter Sagan (CAN) and Elia Viviani (CAN) from Italy.

About 30 kilometers from the finish, the teams in the main field increased their pace significantly in order to be able to catch the outliers in time. Fifteen kilometers from the finish, Bideau and Bárta were still about a minute ahead, five kilometers later the field's gap was halved. Eight kilometers from the finish, Bárta tried to drive on alone. First, Bideau was overtaken, six kilometers from the stage destination also Bárta. The field was now preparing for the mass sprint in front of Buckingham Palace . Marcel Kittel (GIA) won this, ahead of Peter Sagan and the Australian Mark Renshaw (OPQ).
