The 16th stage of the Tour de France 2014 took place on July 22, 2014 and led from Carcassonne over 237.5 km to Bagnères-de-Luchon . During the course of the stage there was an intermediate sprint after 123.5 km as well as a mountain classification in the Hors Catégorie , a classification in the second, a classification in the third and two in the fourth category. The stage counted as a low mountain range stage, 169 riders started.

Race course

Right at the beginning of the race there were many attacks from the field and the like. a. by Thomas Voeckler (EUC). Although the Europcar team tried everything to create a top group, the field was back together in the first mountain classification of the day and Majka (TCS) secured the point on the Cote de Fanjeaux , who thus took the lead in the mountain classification. After the mountain classification, the game continued with attacks and counter attacks. Sylvain Chavanel (IAM) also tried it .

Only half an hour after the mountain classification came a top group with Michael Rogers (TCS), Michael Albasini (OGE), Jérémy Roy (FDJ), Kévin Réza (EUC), Anthony Delaplace (BSE), Bernhard Eisel , Wassil Kiryjenka (SKY), Michał Kwiatkowski (OPQ), Matteo Montaguti (ALM), Roger Kluge (IAM), Jon Izaguirre (MOV) and José Serpa (LAM). However, the Garmin Sharp team was not at all satisfied and took the lead to neutralize this escape. A group of around 50, including Van Den Broeck (LTB) and Rodríguez (KAT), was distanced and was 25 seconds behind the peloton.

After 70 kilometers, the escape group was only 30 seconds ahead of the field. Montaguti attacked from the top group to stay ahead and won the mountain classification on the Cote de Pamiers . Shortly after the mountain classification, the field caught up with the top group and almost at the same time the drivers from the group of suspended drivers came back. Seconds later there was the decisive attack that made up the group of the day. This group included Bernhard Eisel, Wassil Kiryjenka, Jon Izaguirre, Michael Rogers, Michał Kwiatkowski, Jan Bakelants (OPQ), Matteo Montaguti, Samuel Dumoulin (ALM), Tom Slagter (GRS), José Serpa , Jérémy Roy, Tony Gallopin ( LTB), Greg Van Avermaet (BMC), Kévin Réza, Thomas Voeckler, Cyril Gautier , (EUC), Michael Albasini, Jens Keukeleire (OGE), Roger Kluge , Anthony Delaplace and Florian Vachon (BSE). Only within a few kilometers did they quickly have a large lead of 2:50 minutes, as nobody in the peloton was tracking.

After 105 kilometers the outliers had a lead of 5:20 minutes and this slowly increased with the length of the race. In the intermediate sprint, which Kluge won ahead of Van Avermaet and Roy, the escape group was already more than six minutes ahead. With 100 kilometers to go, the outliers were already 8:30 minutes ahead and it continued to climb.

In the mountain classification of the second category on the Col de Portet-d'Aspet , which Voeckler won ahead of Rogers and Bakelants, the escape group was already slightly more than nine minutes ahead. At the next mountain prize, that of the third category on the Col des Ares, which Voeckler won ahead of Serpa, the front runners already have a lead of over eleven minutes and Kwiatkowski is slowly beginning to take a position. Subsequently, the fugitives even extended their lead to 12:40 minutes with 39.4 kilometers to go. Then the ledge began to melt somewhat. In the undulating approach to Port de Balès , the Astana team's pacemakers, who led for hours, slowly reduced their lead with the help of the Movistar team .

There were several attempts to escape in the lead group on the climb, so that 27 kilometers from the finish only Gautier, Voeckler, Rogers and Serpa were in the lead. The Movistar team meanwhile increased the pace in the peloton, which only the mountain specialists could follow. In the upper part of the mountain, Van Den Broeck, Rolland , Schleck and van Garderen also fell behind. In the top group, the two remaining Europcar drivers tried to play a game of cat and mouse. Rogers took over the pace work, neutralized the breakaway attempt and drove from the front up to the mountain classification. He eliminated Gautier, who was caught by Kiryjenka, while Serpa won the sprint for around 25 mountain points and was followed by Voeckler. 17 seconds later Kiryjenka and Gautier crossed the mountain classification.

Meanwhile, Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) increased the pace with a brilliant attack, which only Nibali (AST), Valverde (MOV) and Péraud (ALM) could follow, but not König (TNE), ten Dam (BEL) and Bardet (ALM) . A short time later, the pacemakers Arnold Jeannesson (FDJ) and John Gadret (MOV) caught up with the fugitives. After Jeannesson drove at a high speed almost to the summit, Pinot attacked shortly before the summit, which was also very successful. Not only did he shake off Péraud and Valverde, but also Nibali - for at least a few seconds.

The parallel races continued in the descent. Kiryjenka single-handedly closed the gap to the top trio, which provoked attacks from the Europcar team, but Rogers found a gap and outpaced the Europcar drivers and won the stage in the style of a finisher. Voeckler won the sprint for second place ahead of Kiryjenka after Gautier tried unsuccessfully to close the gap to Rogers for his teammate Voeckler.

Nibali was able to close the gap to Pinot quickly, although he was hindered by a press vehicle that blocked him. Valverde caught up only a short time later and again seconds later Péraud. Then Roy and Izagirre came into the group, which were called back from the top group. Gadret also rolled over from behind. Behind them, Bardet and a teammate tried to close the gap. All other favorites worked together in small groups, or rather moved towards the goal in solo drives. Only van Garderen, who was one of the biggest deficits on the day's winner, could count on three of his teammates. All of these groups tried to cross the finish line as quickly as possible and harmonized very well. In the descent, Leopold König single-handedly closed the gap to the maillot jaune group and thus moved up well in the overall standings. Thibaut Pinot took over the white jersey from Romain Bardet and Rafał Majka took over the dotted jersey from Joaquim Rodríguez.
