Race course

After a hectic initial phase of the stage, in which Marcel Kittel and Jurgen Van Den Broeck fell, there were a number of attacks and counter attacks. At the first mountain classification of the day, a top group of five formed, consisting of Giovanni Visconti , Alessandro De Marchi , Blel Kadri , Kristijan Đurasek and Daniel Oss , who were accompanied by Bartosz Huzarski and Brice Feillu shortly before the mountain classification . Immediately after the mountain classification of the third category on the Col de la Croix de Montvieux , which was won by Visconti before Kadri, the septet was accompanied by Rudy Molard and Jan Bakelants , which was the group of the day.

At the beginning of the ascent to Col de Palaquit , the runaway's lead had decreased to less than two minutes. Through various attacks on the ascent, Kadri, Bakelants and De Marchi were now able to establish themselves at the top. With 57.5 kilometers to go, De Marchi finally pulled away from his last two companions and tried to win the stage with a solo ride. In the peloton, the Astana and Sky teams now took turns working at pace. Although many drivers were left behind, only Michał Kwiatkowski had problems following of the remaining main favorites . The mountain prize, which was won 45.5 kilometers from the finish, was won by De Marchi, who was 1:10 minutes ahead of Bakelants and 1:38 minutes ahead of Maté. The peloton crossed the line 2:45 minutes behind.

De Marchi won the sprint classification in the valley ahead of Bakelants. The main field, which had caught up in the downhill Maté, contested the intermediate sprint 3:41 minutes behind. At the beginning of the actual ascent to Chamrousse , De Marchi was 42 seconds ahead of Bakelants and two and a half minutes on the peloton, in which the Movistar team took over the pace at this point . The favorites Kwiatkowski and Rodríguez could not keep up with this increase in pace. The team of Vincenzo Nibali took over the pace of work and took De Marchi 13.8 kilometers from the finish one. With Richie Porte, one of Nibali's main competitors , fell behind with 12.5 kilometers to go. Eventually Valverde attacked and only Pinot and Nibali could follow him. With 6.7 kilometers to go, Nibali attacked and took the lead. With 2.4 kilometers to go, Valverde and Pinot were already 41 seconds behind Nibali, who finally crossed the finish line first with a ten-second lead. The remaining positions and distances were extended on the last, somewhat flatter kilometer. Majka, who did not do any leadership work during the whole attack, defeated König in the sprint and secured the second stage place. The remaining places were also driven out in sprints in the respective groups.
