The 2nd stage of the Tour de France 2014 took place on July 6, 2014 and led from York over 201 km to Sheffield . During the course of the stage there was an intermediate sprint and a mountain classification in the second category, five ratings in the third and three ratings in the fourth category. This meant that the second stage counted as a low mountain range stage, with 197 riders at the start.
Shortly after the start, a breakaway group of six formed, including Blel Kadri (ALM). After twelve kilometers, Bart De Clercq (LTB) caught up with the leading group, which was around 2:30 minutes ahead of the peloton. The first mountain classification was secured by Cyril Lemoine (COF) and thus achieved a point in the classification for the dotted jersey. At race kilometer 50, the peloton was about four minutes behind the seven leading drivers. The following intermediate sprint at 68 km was won by Blel Kadri. He secured 20 points for the sprint classification. Shortly before the second mountain classification and the highest point of the stage, the Frenchman Perrig Quéméneur (EUC) attacked from the leading group and was the first to achieve the classification with two points. The main field was 3:20 minutes behind. The third mountain classification after 112 km was again secured by Cyril Lemoine in front of David de la Cruz (TNE). Both riders were also the first to reach Greetland's climb.
In the main field, the pace has now been tightened by Tinkoff-Saxo . The outliers were 80 kilometers from the finish only about a minute ahead of the peloton . On the ascent of Holme Moss , the seven leaders were only about 20 seconds ahead. From this situation Blel Kadri attacked, followed by Cyril Lemoine and Armindo Fonseca (BSE). However, Kadri leaves both behind. Soon afterwards, Thomas Voeckler (EUC) caught up with him after an attack from the main field. There the Sky team around last year's winner Chris Froome did the pace work. Before the mountain classification, however, Voeckler fell back behind Kadri, who was again alone in the lead. A five-man chase group, including Voeckler, had now formed behind him. This was about 30 seconds behind the Frenchman, the main field 1:10 min behind him. In the peloton, the Cannondale team led by Peter Sagan and Tinkoff-Saxo led by Alberto Contador initially put pressure on them. Due to the increased pace, the chasing group was overtaken 37 kilometers from the finish, a little later Kadri was also caught.
The field fell apart on the ascent of Midhopestones : the American Andrew Talansky and the Dutch Tom Slagter from the Garmin-Sharp team set the pace, the top group comprised 24 drivers. Slagter took the mountain classification ahead of Talansky. After the ascent, the main field came together again. Andrij Hrywko (AST) from Ukraine won the next mountain classification . In the following descent, the French attacked Jean-Christophe Péraud (ALM) and Pierre Rolland (EUC) and created a small lead of around 15 seconds. Péraud fell back a little later, now Rolland was alone at the top. With eight kilometers to go, he was caught by the peloton, in which Cannondale set the pace.
The last climb from Jenkin Road then brought about the race result: first Froome tried to pull away, later Sagan was back in front. Two kilometers from the finish, Vincenzo Nibali (AST) was able to pull away and gain a lead of around 100 meters. He saved two seconds over the finish line and thus secured both the stage win and the overall lead, which he took over from Marcel Kittel. Cyril Lemoine was the new wearer of the dotted jersey , Peter Sagan took over the green jersey from Marcel Kittel.
