In 2003 Samy Deluxe founded the label Deluxe Records as a sub-label of the EMI Group . Two years later he presented the label and the first artists signed by him, Headliners and Illo, via the platform of a label sampler, which is called Deluxe Records - Let's Go! was released and debuted at number 26 on the album charts. Over the next two years, Samy Deluxe expanded the number of artists on his label by adding rappers Ali A $, Blade, Snaga & Pillath , Manuellsen and Tua. In the first half of 2008, both Snaga & Pillath and Manuellsen announced that they would end their collaboration with the Hamburg label. Furthermore, Illo ended his activity as a rapper, the headliners, which had consisted of the musicians Eddy Soulo, Dashenn and Neo, disbanded and Blade also parted ways with Deluxe Records . Due to these events, only the rappers Ali A $ and Tua remained as artists of the label, so that they contribute to the second sampler of the label together with Samy Deluxe.

Emergence

Samy Deluxe, Ali A $ and Tua first met to select beats for the sampler. The rappers chose the productions they wanted to use for songs. Collaborations developed on beats that two or all members of the label wanted to use. Ali A $ said in an interview that the rappers from Deluxe Records have little in common apart from the claim to want to produce good music, so that the agreement on a common musical "intersection" is more difficult to establish than, for example, with the samplers of the Aggro label Berlin , where, from Ali A $'s point of view, the artists can come to an agreement more quickly thanks to the common background in Berlin. The first track created for the sampler was Tua and Ali A $ Castle in the Air .

Darling, I've shrunk the label, it doesn't contain any guest posts by other rappers, although a post by a US rapper was advertised in advance of the release. After the sampler was released, it was announced that Brisco, who is signed to Lil Wayne 's Cash Money Records label, should be heard on Liebling, I've Shrunk the Label . However, this failed because the necessary approvals for the song were not given in time.

The production of the sampler was largely taken over by the producer duo Instrumens. In addition, Samy Deluxe contributed some beats in collaboration with the instruments. Tua has produced four pieces for the album , including the title A Little Song with No Text.

The title of the sampler was an idea by Ali A $, which, according to him, came about on a “whim”: “ With this saying I wanted to exaggerate the current label situation a bit. Less than two years ago there were ten of us and now there are only three of us left. “Darling, I've shrunk the label” alludes to the title of the 1989 film “ Darling, I've shrunk the children ”.

Texts

Samy Deluxe

The three rappers deal with very different topics on the sampler. Titles like Castle in the Air are thematically serious, whereas the song Mitten im Nacht is humorous. Samy Deluxe describes the sampler as an "entertainment album" and attaches importance to the fact that the focus is on "good rhymes" and "funny ideas".

Tua deals with the marketing of albums in the title Marketing . In the hookline of the title, the rapper questions the sense of marketing : “ Marketing or marketing - nobody buys records, what is marketing worth? “In Marketing , Tua also describes the situation of other musicians who were able to enter the charts through marketing, but still not earn enough money with their music due to the declining sales of CDs.

Ali A $ and Tua have contributed four songs together for the sampler with Luftschloss , Stanislav , Jung and Motivated and What a Bad luck . In an interview, Ali explained to A $ that the titles with Tua were "quieter pieces", because these songs "intersected" with the Reutlinger. In the piece Stanislav , Ali A $ and Tua make fun of other rappers who, instead of bringing their own ideas into their music, follow trends, want to distinguish themselves by depicting exaggerated harshness and, due to lack of talent, cannot write sensible lyrics. The title Luftschloss deals with the dreams and ideas the two rappers have of life. From Ali A $'s point of view, castle in the air is “really poetic”.

marketing

A video was made for the title Once Upon a Time by Ali A $. In addition, as part of the publication of the sampler, a snippet was made available on the Internet, with the help of which the listener can get an impression of Liebling, I've shrunk the label .

The shop on the Mzee.com website combined the first orders for the sampler with an offer in which the buyer received a limited-edition T-shirt in size XL in addition to the sound carrier.

criticism

Ali A $ in 2008

In a review by the German hip-hop magazine Juice , the sampler received a positive rating because it shows “ how varied, entertaining and relevant German-language rap music [ ... ] can be. “The editors emphasize the thematic range of the pieces as well as the different“ moods ”created by Samy Deluxe, Tua and Ali A $. In addition, in addition to the performance of the rappers, the beats of the instrumens and Tua, which ensure that darling, I've shrunk the label, isalso really good music ”.

From the point of view of the editors of the Rap.de website, the sampler could " not inspire ". Samy Deluxe, Tua and Ali A $ are talented rappers with humorous lyrics, but that is not enough to provide entertainment for the entire duration of the album. The reason for this is the productions of the titles, which, with the exception of Tuas Beat for the piece Because it's time is now , are " mainly average ". The song Being an Artist is featured positively in the review for the entertaining and thoughtfulness expressed. In contrast, be Ali A $ ' Once upon a time, it was boring. For the reviewer, Samy Deluxe is one of the best German rappers, but for the Hamburger there seems to be “ no more space in the current German rap scene ”.
