The privet ( Ligustrum ), or rarely Rain pastures called, are a genus of plants from the family of Olive Family (Oleaceae).
description
Ligustrum species grow as deciduous or evergreen shrubs or trees . The opposite leaves are short-stalked, simple and have entire margins.
The flowers are in terminal or axillary, often paniculate inflorescences . The hermaphrodite, four-fold flowers are often fragrant. The four sepals are fused bell-shaped. The four mostly white petals are fused tubular to funnel-shaped. The two stamens do not protrude from the corolla tube. Two carpels have become a top permanent ovary grown. One to three-seeded berries or stone fruits are formed.
Occurrence
The Ligustrum species have areas in the Old World . Most species are native to eastern Asia , with a few in Europe , Africa and Australasia . In Europe only the common privet ( Ligustrum vulgare ) is native.
Few species are cultivated as ornamental trees and especially used in gardens to create hedges . Most of these species are native to Japan or China . Privet is often planted as a cut hedge.
Systematics
The genus Ligustrum belongs to the tribe Oleeae in the family of Oleaceae . Synonyms for Ligustrum L. are: Esquirolia H.Lév. , Faulia Raf. , Ligustridium Spach , Parasyringa W.W.Sm. , Phlyarodoxa S.Moore , Visiania DC.
There are around 40 to 50 species of Ligustrum :
- Ligustrum angustum B.M. Miao : It occurs in Guizhou and Guangxi.
- Ligustrum australianum F. Muell. : It occurs in northern and eastern Queensland.
- Ligustrum compactum (Wall. Ex G.Don) Hook. f. & Thomson ex Brandis : The home is India, Nepal, Bhutan and China (Hebei, Sichuan, Xizang, Yunnan). There are two varieties.
- Ligustrum confusum Decne. : The homeland is India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand and China (Xizang, Yunnan). There are two varieties.
- Ligustrum cumingianum Decne. : It occurs in the Philippines.
- Delavay's privet ( Ligustrum delavayanum Har. ): Home is Myanmar and China (Guizhou, Hubei, Sichuan, Yunnan)
- Ligustrum expansum Rehder : It occurs from southern China to northern Vietnam.
- Ligustrum foliosum Nakai : The home is southern Korea
- Ligustrum gamblei Ramamoorthy : It occurs in southern India.
- Ligustrum glomeratum flower : It occurs from the Andamans to New Guinea.
- Ligustrum gracile Rehder : It occurs in Sichuan and Yunnan.
- Ligustrum guangdongense R.J.Wang & HZWen : The species first described in 2012 occurs in Guangdong.
- Ligustrum henryi Hemsl. : The home is China (Gansu, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Yunnan).
- Ligustrum × ibolium Coe ex Rehder = Ligustrum obtusifolium × Ligustrum ovalifolium
- Lashed Privet ( Ligustrum ibota Sieb. ): It is native to central and southern Japan and Korea.
- Japanese privet ( Ligustrum japonicum Thunb. ): It occurs from southeast China to ind temperate East Asia.
- Ligustrum leucanthum (S.Moore) PSGreen : It occurs from central and southern China to southern Korea.
- Ligustrum lianum P.S.Hsu : It occurs from southern China to Hainan.
- Ligustrum lindleyi (Wall. Ex G.Don) PSGreen : It occurs from Assam to Myanmar.
- Ligustrum liukiuense Koidz. : The home is the Ryukyu Islands of Japan.
- Shiny Privet or Shiny Privet ( Ligustrum lucidum W.T. Aiton): Home is China, Hainn and southern Korea; however, the species occurs as a neophyte in Europe, Africa, Japan, Australia and America.
- Ligustrum micranthum Zucc. : It occurs from the Ogasawara Islands to the Kazan-rettō archipelago.
- Ligustrum morrisonense Kaneh. & Sasaki : The home is Taiwan
- Ligustrum myrsinites Decne. : It occurs in Assam .
- Ligustrum Nepalese Wall. : The homeland is India, Nepal and Myanmar
- Ligustrum novoguineense Lingelsh. : It occurs in New Guinea.
- Ligustrum obovatilimbum B.M. Miao : It is only found in Guangdong.

Blunt-leaved privet ( Ligustrum obtusifolium Sieb. & Zucc. ): The home is China, Korea and Japan There are two subspecies:
- Ligustrum obtusifolium subsp. microphyllum (Nakai) PSGreen : It occurs in eastern China and on Jeju-do .
- Ligustrum obtusifolium subsp. obtusifolium : It occurs from eastern China to Korea and Japan.
- Oval-leaved privet ( Ligustrum ovalifolium Hassk. ), Also called broad-leaved privet; his home is Japan and southern Korea. There are three varieties.
- Ligustrum pricei Hayata : It occurs from central China to Taiwan .
- Ligustrum punctifolium M.C.Chang : It occurs from Hong Kong to Vietnam.
- Ligustrum quihoui Carrière : Home is China, southern Korea and Tibet.
- Ligustrum retusum Merr. : It occurs from Hainan to Vietnam.

Ligustrum robustum (Roxb.) Blume : Home is India, the Laccadives , Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, Sumatra and China; the species is naturalized in North America, Mauritius and Réunion. There are three subspecies:
- Ligustrum robustum subsp. perrottetii (A.DC.) de Juana (Syn .: Ligustrum perrottetii A.DC. ): It occurs on the Laccadives , on the Andamans and in southern India.
- Ligustrum robustum subsp. robustum : It occurs from northeast India to Indochina.
- Ligustrum robustum subsp. walkeri (Decne.) PSGreen : It is originally found in southern India and Sri Lanka.
- Ligustrum salicinum Nakai : It occurs in central and southern Japan and on Jeju-do.
- Ligustrum sempervirens (Franch.) Lingelsh. : The home is China (Sichuan, Yunnan)
- Chinese privet ( Ligustrum sinense Lour. ): Native to China, Taiwan, Laos and Vietnam; the species is naturalized in South Africa, North America, Australia and New Zealand. There are eight varieties.
- Ligustrum stenophyllum Quisumb. & Merr. : It occurs on Luzon .
- Ligustrum strongylophyllum Hemsl. : The home is China (Gansu, Hubei, Shaanxi, Sichuan).
- Ligustrum tamakii Hatus. : It occurs on the Nansei Islands.
- Ligustrum tenuipes M.C.Chang : It occurs in northeastern Guangxi.
- Ligustrum tschonoskii Decne. : The homeland is Japan, the Kuril Islands and Sakhalin.
- Ligustrum undulatum flower : It occurs in New Guinea.
- Common privet ( Ligustrum vulgare L. ): Home is Europe to northwestern Iran and Morocco; The species is naturalized in South Africa, North America, Australia and New Zealand.
- Ligustrum xingrenense D.J.Liu : It occurs in eastern Yunnan and western Guizhou.
